UPDATED: AUG 7, 2009 Draft at Radio Maria in Champaign, IL. Pours a dark brown with a small beige head. Nice aroma of sweet bready malts, caramel dessert, and fruit. I really like the body and mouthfeel on this, full without being too thick and carbonation somewhere between soft and average. Flavor is full of dark caramel, vanilla, raisin, and brown sugar. I think the Syrah barrel traits have melded some (in a good way), and adds some oaky and dark fruit notes. Alcohol well hidden on the finish. I can’t believe the low ratings on this. This beer was excellent.

Dark ruby-brown with a small beige head. Aroma of caramel, plenty of vanilla, light wine and some wood. The flavor has a light red wine touch, some wood, rich toasty malt, light bitterness, some caramel, and a drying, strong alcoholic finish. Full bodied with small bubbles and a woody, tannic, and lightly astringent finish. Interesting aroma, but the malt character that should shine in a doppelbock is a little too covered by the barrel. Not a home run, but I would give it another try.

ON tap at brewery. Copper red with a tan head. Amazing sweet, oak, and wine aroma. Very tangy citrus and caramel taste initially, followed by a tangy wine and oak taste, and finishing with a fruity wine taste. Excellent.

Draft at San Diego Brewing Company in December of last year (had originally rated the non-barrel aged version b/c there was no entry for this yet). Brown pour with a reddish hint. Aroma is of rye and bourbon. Flavor is both sweet and sour. Very woody and oaky sourness, and the malt is not very good. Just a bad example overall.

Had this back in December of last year; at the time there was no entery for the barrel aged version. Original rating follows. (On tap at the San Diego Brewing Company; said it was barrel aged on the blackboard. I normally like anything barrel aged, however the aging here created a sweet and sour dynamic. Flavor had an oaky sourness with some sweet malt. Not a great example of the style. )

Draught. Syrah Barrel-aged ! Deep chestnut with small, dense yelllow-brownish head. Sweet-vanilla, somehow brandy notes (rather than wine), very good reforming the classical Doppelbock aromas. Slight sourish-winegrapey flavour, sweet-sour in PERFECT balance, and alcohol swarming faintly throughout. Ends long raisiny. Very full-bodied, slick, viscuous. WOW. No German would dream this up. This is where California shows real genius.

On nitro at the HomeBrewMart today. Pours dark brown with dark red highlights. Creamy tan head with sheet lace. Smells dark and malty, sweet, woody, and red wine spicy. Tastes malty and woody. Red wine flavors, sour and boozey, some acidity. Mouthfeel is full and smooth with mellow, velvety carbonation.

Tap @ O’Briens: Poured a clear deep brown-red color with an off-white head. Sweet raisiny aroma with light red wine notes. The flavor was sweet and fruity with notes of red wine. Tannic finish. Light body and light carbonation.

n draft at O’Brien’s Pub during their anniversary week barrel aged night, shared with Goldtwins, DarkElf, Wetherl, and others. deep redish-brown with nice firm head. the nose was sour and fruity, the flavor was very intresting carmel, sour fruit and som spiceness (:like a good peppery syrah) this tasted like a totaly differnet brew from the normal navigator I’ve had a number of times.

tap at the brewery - Pours amber with a thin head and an aroma of malt and wine. That wine really comes through in the flavor, yielding a fruity, somewhat sour beer that’s unlike any doppelbock that I’ve had before. It’s full bodied and well, interesting. While I found it alright, I definitely wasn’t as impressed as others were.
