Inspired by the hoppier West Coast BarleyWines in the late ’80s and early ’90s. This American Barley Wine is full of rich roasted caramel flavors and the spice and aroma from many hop additions. Eighty Lovibond Crystal Malt helps create a light mahogany color and dry hopping with Cascade Hops add to the many layers of flavors in this ever-evolving ale. When Three Sheets Barley Wine is fresh, it almost leans into the Double/Imperial Red category. Cellar it for a year, expect the taste of the hop bitterness and hop aroma to back off and the rich melanoidin sugars, from a two hour boil, step forward caressing you with a complex malty smoothness.

Little to no head, but there’s sone streaky lace. Dark brown where light shines through. Darker malt aroma. Not really toasted or chocolate, but true to style. The flavor is high in alcohol, dark malt (without toast or chocolate), and mild hop. Strong alcohol swallow.

Keg at the Little Italy Tasting Room, SD, 12/11/14. Lightly hazed chestnut brown with a decent beige swirl and edgework. Nose is caramel, toasted brown sugars, dark fruits, cake mix, light booze. Taste comprises toffee, melow dark fruit rinds, dates, light spice, hoppy backnotes, nutty twang. Medium + body, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Ok barley wine, not a huge amount of depth but a decent sipper none the less.

Clear Amber pour with an off white head. Sweet malty aromas. The taste follows suit with mellow hoppy bitterness. Not overly hoppy sort of a blend between an American and English barley wine. Good body and mouthfeel.

Dark amber body, medium to thin pale tan head, spotty lacing. Toffee, caramel, earth, a spot of tootsie roll, florals. Medium to full bodied with moderate to gentle carbonation, light sweetness.

10/18/2014. On draft at Chuck’s 85th as part of a 4-Ballast Point beer sampler. Thick and dark, modest amount of off-white head, not much lace. Beer holds its own against the glass. Aroma is caramel, molasses, some herbal notes, a little musty (barrel?). Fairly sweet, with a hint of the bitter from the hops and some spiciness from the alcohol. Body is not as heavy as I would expect for a barleywine, oily, light carbonation, medium-long finish. Overall, very enjoyable for the last beer of the evening, fortunately just samplers or I would be in trouble.

nice rich barleywine. big fan of the rum/bourbon version. the base is very different, but good. rich dark malts and a good dash of nearly IPA like hops. I hope to have again.
