COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the hoppier West Coast BarleyWines in the late ’80s and early ’90s. This American Barley Wine is full of rich roasted caramel flavors and the spice and aroma from many hop additions. Eighty Lovibond Crystal Malt helps create a light mahogany color and dry hopping with Cascade Hops add to the many layers of flavors in this ever-evolving ale. When Three Sheets Barley Wine is fresh, it almost leans into the Double/Imperial Red category. Cellar it for a year, expect the taste of the hop bitterness and hop aroma to back off and the rich melanoidin sugars, from a two hour boil, step forward caressing you with a complex malty smoothness.

Tap at Rattle N Hum for the Ballast Point Promo night with Joe and Zach. Pours a hazed medium to deep amber with a thinning head- fades. Aroma is very sharp earthy crystal malt, caramel, honey, maple, earth, light grassy hops, and ok fruity raisin esters. Flavor is also a touch too sharp with dark crystal malts, brown sugar, sweet molasses and earth with a light hoppy finish- somewhat smooth- ok.

This is an American-style barleywine?! No no no.... Hot nose. Kinda faint, but nice bite of malts, slight hops and vanilla. Dark appearance, almost black. Taste is kinda hot, but a lot of sweetness - malt, vanilla, wood. Everything I love about a barleywine. A touch too hot for me, and a bit thin, but otherwise this is great stuff from Ballast Point. More West Coast English-style barleywines please!

On tap at Ballast Point. Pours deep reddish brown. Aroma is sweet with malt character. Taste is refreshing, smooth and sweet and some spicy, earthy undertones with a bit of warmth from the alcohol but very balanced. very good. I liked this better than the barrel aged version

On tap at Downtown Johny Brown’s. Pours a dark ruby red with a thick creamy off white head that leaves behind a wall of lacing. Cotton candy and maple syrup aroma. Sure it has a big sweetness, but it has the hop content to balance this out. In fact, this seems smooth enough to be somewhere between and american and an english barleywine. Lots of cherries to the finish.

Had this on tap this past weekend at the Great Alaskan Beer and Barley Wine Festival in Anchorage, AK. Colour... cloudy, dark amber. Nose... pub mustard, garlic and BBQ sauce. Palate... sour, tangy, some hops and rotten, spent malt. Something is fouled here! Bad lines?? I’ve had a few beers from these folks and they’ve been outstanding. This one, however, is not quite right!

On tap at ballast point. Pours dark reddish brown with a small off white head. Aroma is mostly citrusy hops and burnt caramel. Flavor is caramel, smooth bitterness, and a lot of citrus. Palate is full, good carbonation and resinous.

On tap at Ballast Point. Pours deep reddish brown. Nose has a lot of good sweet red fruit and inviting malt character. Taste is very clean, smooth and sweet with a candy component and some spice undertones. Very nice barley wine.

Served from tap at the brewery. Appearance is clear bodied amber hue with no real head. The aroma and flavors of this barley wine are more English tasting with the malt profile. A nice toffee and caramel flavor adds the sweetness to this brew. A good barley wine that has some unique notes.
