COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the hoppier West Coast BarleyWines in the late ’80s and early ’90s. This American Barley Wine is full of rich roasted caramel flavors and the spice and aroma from many hop additions. Eighty Lovibond Crystal Malt helps create a light mahogany color and dry hopping with Cascade Hops add to the many layers of flavors in this ever-evolving ale. When Three Sheets Barley Wine is fresh, it almost leans into the Double/Imperial Red category. Cellar it for a year, expect the taste of the hop bitterness and hop aroma to back off and the rich melanoidin sugars, from a two hour boil, step forward caressing you with a complex malty smoothness.

Draft. Rich amber beer with a light tan head. Sweet malt aroma. Rich malt flavor with toffee, brown sugar and light earthiness. Medium-plus bodied. Toffee lingers with some darker malts. Richer malts with hops backing and some light fruitiness.

Leftover from BW fest at Toronado. Pours with a fairly dark color. Did not like this at all, very medicinal and boozy tasting seemed way off. Maybe the keg had a problem.

Draught at Toronado SD. Very pleasant and drinkable barley wine. Not overpowering at any point and certainly easy to drink. Seemed very mellow and I did not get some of the heat from the alcohol that others mentioned. Solid barley wine that is true to type.

UPDATED: FEB 14, 2010 On tap at Toronado for Barleywine fest 2009, then again in 2010. Reddish-brown color with a small off-white head. Aroma of caramel malt, dark fruits, brandy, and some hops. Flavor is lots of caramel malt with toffee notes, somewhat fruity, with some port-like and vinous flavors and noticeable alcohol. Full mouthfeel, fairly low carbonation, and just mild booziness. A very good barleywine overall.

On tap at Stone Brewery. Dark brown pour with a good 1 finger head. Smell is of dark fruits, caramel, and a delicate hint of hops. The mouthfeel is very smooth and the flavors blend together beautifully. Dark fruits, caramel, and roasty malts with a gentle hop finish. You can really tell that this is a blend of some older barleywines as it has really had a chance to mellow and smooth out. Great beer.

Enjoyed this on tap at the brewery. Brimming with sweet fall spices red apples and citrus. Lots of creamy malts and bitter hops on the finish along with an aggressive amount of alcohol. Certainly one of Ballast Points better beers.

Pours is a clear gold with thin white head. Mostly sweet caramel malt, with notes of fruit, oak, vanilla, and earthy hops. Pretty good, but not one of my favorites.

On tap at Stone. Smells sharp and spicy. Tastes hot of alcohol, like it needs to settle down a bit. Bubblegum? Spicy and bitter, like aspirin a bit, but still really good.
