Inspired by the hoppier West Coast BarleyWines in the late ’80s and early ’90s. This American Barley Wine is full of rich roasted caramel flavors and the spice and aroma from many hop additions. Eighty Lovibond Crystal Malt helps create a light mahogany color and dry hopping with Cascade Hops add to the many layers of flavors in this ever-evolving ale. When Three Sheets Barley Wine is fresh, it almost leans into the Double/Imperial Red category. Cellar it for a year, expect the taste of the hop bitterness and hop aroma to back off and the rich melanoidin sugars, from a two hour boil, step forward caressing you with a complex malty smoothness.

02.19.05 Tap at Toronado BWF Deep garnet color with little head, but this sample sat on the table for a while before I got to it. Lots of molasses and brown sugar, dried figs, citrus pithiness, alcohol on nose. Flavors are sweet and malt heavy up front, a bit of nutmeg and a punch of clove. Money balance. I dig this stuff. Finish loses luster as it fades to a more light and hoppy IIPA, missing some lingering malt stickiness.

Tap @ Toronado 2005 barley wine festival. Dark cherry color with a big foamy tan head. Smooth with plenty of cherry in the flavor. Finishes dry.

On tap at Max's in the Fell's Point distriict, Baltimore, MD. Opaque, dark brown with a small tan head and excellent lacing. Aroma of caramel, toffee, orange, citrus, bread, light fruit and, after it warms some, brown sugar. Taste of roasted malt, pineapple, orange, peaches, toffee, citrus, booze, dried fruit, tobacco, caramel earthy hops, chocolate, red grapes and brown sugar with even more fruity and malty flavors presenting themselves as it warms. Medium/full body and high/medium carbonization. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

A really interesting barley wine.. Pours a dark mahogany. Aromas are sweet and vinous. Dark fruit too. Flavors are sweet raisins, dark fruit and a nice cherry tang on the back end. Some booze too. I really liked this.

This barley wine pours with a deep reddish-brown body topped by a thick head with lots of lacing. Slighlty sweet and malty with nice fruity notes, some caramel and a nice hoppy bitterness. Full bodied, smooth and a touch dry.

NorCal tasting Feb 07 - This was a very tasty barleywine and something I can work with after a couple disasters from Ballast Point. A sweet, sweet nose with caramel being the biggest aroma. Underneath the carmael was a little brown sugar, some earth and even a little hops. Appearance was beautifully clear, with a maple syrup/deep dark golden color with a minimal head. Mouthfeel was a little on the thin side, but nothing major. Flavors were caramel, toffee, dark fruits. Everything was really nicely balanced.

On tap at Good Beer. Pretty hoppy finish on this barley wine. Mild aroma. Molasses sweetness to start, then moving to a more bitter hop taste. Good, but not really exciting.

PP Strong Ale fest. Deep orange and copper in color with a nice off white fluffy head. Malty toffee bready aroma. Earthy hoppy toffee caramel flavor. Figs, raisins, dates and oak notes. Medium bodied. Finish is roasty. Very drinkable. Enjoyable.
