COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the hoppier West Coast BarleyWines in the late ’80s and early ’90s. This American Barley Wine is full of rich roasted caramel flavors and the spice and aroma from many hop additions. Eighty Lovibond Crystal Malt helps create a light mahogany color and dry hopping with Cascade Hops add to the many layers of flavors in this ever-evolving ale. When Three Sheets Barley Wine is fresh, it almost leans into the Double/Imperial Red category. Cellar it for a year, expect the taste of the hop bitterness and hop aroma to back off and the rich melanoidin sugars, from a two hour boil, step forward caressing you with a complex malty smoothness.

This barley wine pours with a deep reddish-brown body topped by a thick head with lots of lacing. Slighlty sweet and malty with nice fruity notes, some caramel and a nice hoppy bitterness. Full bodied, smooth and a touch dry.

NorCal tasting Feb 07 - This was a very tasty barleywine and something I can work with after a couple disasters from Ballast Point. A sweet, sweet nose with caramel being the biggest aroma. Underneath the carmael was a little brown sugar, some earth and even a little hops. Appearance was beautifully clear, with a maple syrup/deep dark golden color with a minimal head. Mouthfeel was a little on the thin side, but nothing major. Flavors were caramel, toffee, dark fruits. Everything was really nicely balanced.

PP Strong Ale fest. Deep orange and copper in color with a nice off white fluffy head. Malty toffee bready aroma. Earthy hoppy toffee caramel flavor. Figs, raisins, dates and oak notes. Medium bodied. Finish is roasty. Very drinkable. Enjoyable.

@ the homebrew store - This version was 9%. Deep coppery orange, creamy off white head. Nose held rich notes of sweet caramel, pine, and earth, with touches of brown sugar within. Well balanced flavors of all the above from start to finish. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, bittersweet finish. Good stuff...

On tap at Good Beer. Pretty hoppy finish on this barley wine. Mild aroma. Molasses sweetness to start, then moving to a more bitter hop taste. Good, but not really exciting.

On tap at Ballast Point in SD, CA--Deep ruby amber body with a thick off-white head. Hoppy, malty sweet boozy nose. Slight bublegum and candy nose, too. Fruity, chewy, mildly cloying mouthfeel. Sharp bitter boozy finish. Quite good.

On tap at Max's in the Fell's Point distriict, Baltimore, MD. Opaque, dark brown with a small tan head and excellent lacing. Aroma of caramel, toffee, orange, citrus, bread, light fruit and, after it warms some, brown sugar. Taste of roasted malt, pineapple, orange, peaches, toffee, citrus, booze, dried fruit, tobacco, caramel earthy hops, chocolate, red grapes and brown sugar with even more fruity and malty flavors presenting themselves as it warms. Medium/full body and high/medium carbonization. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a hazy amber red color with a tan head. Aroma is malty, caramel, some aged malts, alcohol, and some hops. Flavor is aged malts, caramel, some aged hops, and a nice bitter hop finish. This barleywine is great it combines the great aged barleywine flavor with the fresh hop bitterness.

Fresh batch on draft at the brewery. Pours clear dark amber with a creamy yellow-beige head that lingered well and left nice lacing. Aroma of sweet malts and citrus / piney hops - according to the guy behind the bar, a combination of Chinook, Cluster, Centennial and dry hopped with Cascades. Flavor is very sweet and fruity, yet balanced with a big hop presence - orange and grapefruit with a noticible alcohol bite in the finish. Mouthfeel is full and spritely carbonated. This is still a young barleywine - though it could also classify as a hoppy american strong - and sure to change and mellow as it ages.
