Pours a copper brown with a light taupe head. It has a caramel and grapefruit nose. Caramel and chocolate flavors with some cherry and citrusy notes. The finish is sweet despite the competing esters. The mouthfeel is perfect for the style. It accentuates the flavors and bouquet perfectly.

Tap @ O’Briens. Cloudy brown with a short tan head. Dank, oaky, caramel, earthy malt aroma with a fair amount of grapefruit and pine tar. Excellent taste that seems to swirl resin, dates, figs, caramel, oak, and alcohol in your mouth. There is a constant earth overtone that stays with you throughout that is very nice.

Dig It. Pours deep dark brown with a small brown head. Nose is wood, pine sap, little caramel and wheat bread. Taste is sweet, but has a great bitter ending. Mouthfeel is crisp and sticky, body is heavy and the finish is long.

On tap @ Live Wire. I love Ballast Point, and I love Barley Wines, but this one just did not work for me. The pour was beautiful, but this is very malty, with some smoke and oak in the mix. Probably resembles a European barley wine, rather than the American hoppy BW’s im used to. Good, but not what im used to.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Auburn caramel color, medium sized foamy off white head. Sweet malt intermingles with heavy pine and citrus hop aroma. Heavy malt presence followed by resinous and piney hop characters. Finish has some woody flavors and a slight medicinal quality. Mouthfeel is fairly chewy, but uncommonly smooth for the style.

On cask at Pizza Port Strong Ale Festival 07. Deep orange-brass color with a minimal tan head that settles into nice lacing. I was pretty damn sauced up by the time I got around to this one, so Im going on scribbled handwriting and hazed notions of what I thought about this one. I remember being upset about the incredible booziness of this barleywine; citrus, light caramel and pine notes with light fruits comprise the flavors. Finishes very hot, nearly overwhelming, the alcohol content needs to be tamed here. Whatever, ya know?

Tasted at the brewery. Nice hoppy flavors in this barley wine. Some fruitiness. Excellent!

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 10/20
Leftover from BW fest at Toronado.
Pours with a fairly dark color. Did not like this at all, very medicinal and boozy tasting seemed way off. Maybe the keg had a problem.

Pours hazy orangish brown with tan head and light lacing. Aroma of raisins, brown sugar, and spice. Taste is sweet with some burnt sugar, dark fruit, and an alcohol burn. Very nice.
