doubleo (765), San Diego, California, USA Jan 25, 2008 On-cask at Stone 11/16/07. Pours a reddish brown color with a thick white head that leaves lots of spider web lace down the glass. Red fruit and alcohol on the nose. I get the same kind of red fruit taste that I got on the nose, a good bit of malt on the palate, and of course some booze. Surprisingly thin, but not too thin. Subdued but still vibrant carbonation. Awesome beer. The best brew I’ve ever had on cask. goldtwins (3734), Nesconset, New York, USA Dec 13, 2005 Updated: Feb 7, 2007Draft @ Ballast Pt. This was just the 1 yr. old: Hazy dark amber with a reddish hue. Medium cream colored head. Hop aroma of citrus and pine comes out first. then malty toffee and nut underneath. Some fruitness. big malty flavor. Caramel with some raisins. Hop flavors come through. Nice warmth. 9th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Fest: 3 Year blend (00,02,04 I believe) big malt and hops very smooth and a great balance.8/4/7/4/16
10th Annual SD Strong Ale Fest: 10 Year Blend Third time trying and third different blend this time was a blend using some as old as 10 years. Poured a highly hazed ruby amber color with a creamy beige head. Big aroma that was full of sweet fruity malt. Big citrus and piney hop. Nice caramel base. Malty and fruity flavor with a big piney hop flavor and finish. Semi-dry finish. Full bodied. The best version for sure. patrick767 (1406), fort wayne, Indiana, USA Jan 26, 2008 tap at the brewery - What an appropriate name for a barley wine... it pours dark amber with a thin, long lasting head. The aroma is of heavy malt and dark fruit. Those fruit notes carry on well through the malt rich flavor. Some good hops accents kick in to balance it out and there’s some fairly mild alcohol presence. This barley wine is excellent. Vac (2232), San Diego, California, USA Feb 13, 2005 This barley wine pours with a deep reddish-brown body topped by a thick head with lots of lacing. Slighlty sweet and malty with nice fruity notes, some caramel and a nice hoppy bitterness. Full bodied, smooth and a touch dry. SDbruboy (1822), San Diego, California, USA Feb 2, 2005 Fresh batch on draft at the brewery. Pours clear dark amber with a creamy yellow-beige head that lingered well and left nice lacing. Aroma of sweet malts and citrus / piney hops - according to the guy behind the bar, a combination of Chinook, Cluster, Centennial and dry hopped with Cascades. Flavor is very sweet and fruity, yet balanced with a big hop presence - orange and grapefruit with a noticible alcohol bite in the finish. Mouthfeel is full and spritely carbonated. This is still a young barleywine - though it could also classify as a hoppy american strong - and sure to change and mellow as it ages.
