4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 sauceyhops (104) - carlsbad, California, USA - JAN 13, 2009
On tap at Stone Brewery. Dark brown pour with a good 1 finger head. Smell is of dark fruits, caramel, and a delicate hint of hops. The mouthfeel is very smooth and the flavors blend together beautifully. Dark fruits, caramel, and roasty malts with a gentle hop finish. You can really tell that this is a blend of some older barleywines as it has really had a chance to mellow and smooth out. Great beer.

Cask at Hamiltons SD. Odd color, but very complex nose with a wild over rip muddled fruit but comes together for a nice finish. Barley wines can be a bit much for me sometimes, this held it together. Cask conditioning may have helped add some texture. Cask froth stuck around. Just lots going on and this brew stands out, something I like to see.

A damn fine beer, I would drink it until my liver gave way. Nothing offensive at all, just beer bliss. My favorite of all the 3 sheets variations, very hoppy, bold, sweet, bitter, really a complex beer that i think is at its peak right off the bat.

Dig It. Pours deep dark brown with a small brown head. Nose is wood, pine sap, little caramel and wheat bread. Taste is sweet, but has a great bitter ending. Mouthfeel is crisp and sticky, body is heavy and the finish is long.

Pours a copper brown with a light taupe head. It has a caramel and grapefruit nose. Caramel and chocolate flavors with some cherry and citrusy notes. The finish is sweet despite the competing esters. The mouthfeel is perfect for the style. It accentuates the flavors and bouquet perfectly.

Looks like maple syrup to me. Hints of burnt sugar and cake frosting in the head, the burnt candy thing makes up the body with some of that jager smoothly blended in there.

Tap @ Toronado 2005 barley wine festival. Dark cherry color with a big foamy tan head. Smooth with plenty of cherry in the flavor. Finishes dry.

UPDATED: MAR 9, 2005 Draught: Brown/redwood colors..small to no head..molassis aroma with hints of orange cream & pine needles..candy-like, sweet but not overly so...not too thick or sticky either..smooth and warming..pretty impressive.

Draught Good yellow-creamhead; maroon beer. US hops, milkchocolate, coffee cream, grapes and a fruity finish. Good bready, well-balanced sweet-bitter; finish is very dry-bitterish; flavours of exotic fruit. Well-balanced, quite slick, dry-out effect in the end. Good, if unbelievably discreet in the alcohol for a barley wine.

02.19.05 Tap at Toronado BWF Deep garnet color with little head, but this sample sat on the table for a while before I got to it. Lots of molasses and brown sugar, dried figs, citrus pithiness, alcohol on nose. Flavors are sweet and malt heavy up front, a bit of nutmeg and a punch of clove. Money balance. I dig this stuff. Finish loses luster as it fades to a more light and hoppy IIPA, missing some lingering malt stickiness.
