COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the hoppier West Coast BarleyWines in the late ’80s and early ’90s. This American Barley Wine is full of rich roasted caramel flavors and the spice and aroma from many hop additions. Eighty Lovibond Crystal Malt helps create a light mahogany color and dry hopping with Cascade Hops add to the many layers of flavors in this ever-evolving ale. When Three Sheets Barley Wine is fresh, it almost leans into the Double/Imperial Red category. Cellar it for a year, expect the taste of the hop bitterness and hop aroma to back off and the rich melanoidin sugars, from a two hour boil, step forward caressing you with a complex malty smoothness.

On tap. An unclear dark orange brown beer with a small, light beige head. Some curtains. The aroma has some alcohol, dried fruits and green pine cones, as well as caramel and a roasted touch. It’s full bodied and lightly warning, softly carbonated. The flavor has a nice bitterness, with a little bit alcohol, some caramel and pine cones. Lasting warning finish with bitterness, sweetness and a fruity touch. A nice barley wine, although not as complex as the best. 130821

Pours hazy orangish brown with tan head and light lacing. Aroma of raisins, brown sugar, and spice. Taste is sweet with some burnt sugar, dark fruit, and an alcohol burn. Very nice.

2/19/05. On tap at Toronado Barleywine Festival ’04 in San Francisco, CA 2/19/05. Glossy clear, dark red-orange amber. Very good appearance with a lingering tan head. Good lacing that sticks lightly and a tidal wave of fast reverse lacing. Nose is very freshly hoppy, almost green, and nicley balanced to a red-amber "Hop Whompus"-like hop medley and malt tickle. Sweet and inviting with floral nectar richness. Too much carbonation foam feeling, not much flavor. Plain brittle bitterness and low malt backing. Very dry finish that picks up some of the slack, brightly bitter with a little grass and some dead leaves. Very disappointing after a promising start.

on tap at the "Twisted Stick", one of iceman’s favorite dive bars. Had this one for his going away party. This is a very easy to drink barleywine, Malty & sweet up front, but not too heavy, it was slightly tangy on the finish. Very nice.

The beer poured a brownish red color w/ orange hues; thin lasting head and lacing. The aroma had caramel, dark fruit, slight citrus, and plum/raisin notes. The flavor had dark fruit, caramel, malts, slight citrus and hop notes. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, and creamy w/ a dry finish.

Tasted this last night on tap at Pizza Port’s strong ale fest in carlesbad. Poured with a big frothy head, somewhat unusual for a barleywine. Color was red/amber and quite pretty. Flavor profile reminded me of Green Flash’s 2nd anniversary barleywine (one of my favorites) but without quite as many roasty notes. Quite good.

Draft at the Bistro’s First Barrel-aged Beer Fest; 5 months old 8weeks in the wood for 8 weeks; Nose of caramel and dark fruit; red with a small pink-tinged head; flavor of caramel, alcohol and grapy fruitiness.

On tap @ O’Brien’s San Diego. Beer poured a deep rusty amber color with a thin, off white head. Nose of dried dark fruits like Raisen, pruns, dates? Alcohol was present but, not overwhelming. A good bite on the finish.

Draft at Hamilton’s. Dark brown color, almost black. Aroma is mild grapefruit, citrus, and roasted malt. Flavor has a lot of roasted malt, coffee, and some malt bitterness. Alexanderj thought 3.5ish.
