COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the hoppier West Coast BarleyWines in the late ’80s and early ’90s. This American Barley Wine is full of rich roasted caramel flavors and the spice and aroma from many hop additions. Eighty Lovibond Crystal Malt helps create a light mahogany color and dry hopping with Cascade Hops add to the many layers of flavors in this ever-evolving ale. When Three Sheets Barley Wine is fresh, it almost leans into the Double/Imperial Red category. Cellar it for a year, expect the taste of the hop bitterness and hop aroma to back off and the rich melanoidin sugars, from a two hour boil, step forward caressing you with a complex malty smoothness.

Dark amber body, medium to thin pale tan head, spotty lacing. Toffee, caramel, earth, a spot of tootsie roll, florals. Medium to full bodied with moderate to gentle carbonation, light sweetness.

On tap at the brewery. Vinous plum and pear-like aroma with some noticeable piney hops. Transparent copper color with a yellowish head. Mildly bitter to start finishing sweet and hoppy at the end. I personally like a lot more of the vinous fruitiness in my barleywines. Alcohol hidden well, though.

UPDATED: FEB 23, 2008 On tap@O’Brien’s: Dark amber brown with a small (bar pour) light tan head. Aroma is light and sweet with dark fruit. Flavor starts malty and sweet with a little burnt caramel and some citrus finishing lightly orange rind bitter. Smooth light palate.

Valley Brew tasting Feb 2007 - Aroma and flavor are sweet caramel with sharp piney hops. Palate is sweet and tart. Not too complex but still very tasty. Probably suffering from palate fatigue at this point. I would like to try it again.

PP Strong Ale Fest 07. Cask. Pours orange with a 1 finger tan head. Nose is nice sweet and a bit of dried fruit. High alc in the taste, not much of a great taste otherwise. disappointed.

2007 PP SAF (cask): Coppery hue with a fading head and some lace. The aroma has notes of toffee, caramel, bready malting, some herbal and resiny hops, pepper, apricot, pear, wood, boozy. The taste is quite sticky sweet at first but some resiny bitterness and the alcohol cleanse the palate. Fruity and woody notes follow. With the exception of the bitterness this comes off a lot like a English Styled BW. The mouth feel is sticky and oily, warming and biting. Good but wanted more.

On tap at Stone. Smells sharp and spicy. Tastes hot of alcohol, like it needs to settle down a bit. Bubblegum? Spicy and bitter, like aspirin a bit, but still really good.

On tap at Ballast Point. Pours deep reddish brown. Aroma is sweet with malt character. Taste is refreshing, smooth and sweet and some spicy, earthy undertones with a bit of warmth from the alcohol but very balanced. very good. I liked this better than the barrel aged version

The aroma is sweet and malty. The color is dark ruby black with a tan white head. The flavor of sharp sweet thick malts like in any barleywine.

On tap at Beer Revolution. Pours reddish brown with a modest beige head and a fruity aroma. There is a hearty red malt flavor with a dry finish. Less sweet adn more dry than most barleywines, but still pretty tasty.
