COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Inspired by the hoppier West Coast BarleyWines in the late ’80s and early ’90s. This American Barley Wine is full of rich roasted caramel flavors and the spice and aroma from many hop additions. Eighty Lovibond Crystal Malt helps create a light mahogany color and dry hopping with Cascade Hops add to the many layers of flavors in this ever-evolving ale. When Three Sheets Barley Wine is fresh, it almost leans into the Double/Imperial Red category. Cellar it for a year, expect the taste of the hop bitterness and hop aroma to back off and the rich melanoidin sugars, from a two hour boil, step forward caressing you with a complex malty smoothness.

Served in a tulip glass from the tap at Ballast Point Brewery. Pours dark mahogany with a generous frothy head. Malty aroma with notes of molasses, oaky rum, and burnt sugar. There is a surprising hint of sourness. The flavor is rich in malts that is well balanced with an underlying subtle bitterness. Full body. A great barleywine overall.

Pours clear dark amber / brown with a off-white head. Aroma has notes of malt, alcohol, dried fruits, yeast and toffee. Taste is medium to heavy sweet and light to medium bitter with a long warm, toffee and fruity finish. Body is full, texture is oily, carbonation is soft.

On cask at Pizza Port Strong Ale Festival 07. Deep orange-brass color with a minimal tan head that settles into nice lacing. I was pretty damn sauced up by the time I got around to this one, so Im going on scribbled handwriting and hazed notions of what I thought about this one. I remember being upset about the incredible booziness of this barleywine; citrus, light caramel and pine notes with light fruits comprise the flavors. Finishes very hot, nearly overwhelming, the alcohol content needs to be tamed here. Whatever, ya know?

On tap @ Live Wire. I love Ballast Point, and I love Barley Wines, but this one just did not work for me. The pour was beautiful, but this is very malty, with some smoke and oak in the mix. Probably resembles a European barley wine, rather than the American hoppy BW’s im used to. Good, but not what im used to.

On tap at Good Beer. Pretty hoppy finish on this barley wine. Mild aroma. Molasses sweetness to start, then moving to a more bitter hop taste. Good, but not really exciting.

Draft. Brown amber pour with tan head. Sweet and fruit malt aromas. Flavor is more butting, herbal and bitter tones, some malt tones and a touch of warming.

10z for $10.00 of pure let down. Yeah this shot was WAAAYY overpriced but I paid it for a new rape, er I meant rate. Poured a pitch black body with an average to smaller creamy beige head. Aroma was rather subdued even after sitting for some time. Notes of chocolate, light molasses and a hint of toffee. Medium bodied with decently strong carbonation for a BarleyWine. Flavor of light chocolate, brown bread, grains, cold coffee???? Is this the right beer??

Pours a cloudy brown/amber hue with a bubbly head. Aromas of flowers and a nice bitterness. Flavors of old hops, citrus, a little copper, some butteryness with a light bitter finish.

Deep amber pour with neglectable head. Typical nose pointing straight to the West Coast through a dash of fresh sprucey hops that clean the surface of rather raw, sweet vinous malts that shine through their various fruit undertones more than sheer richness. Carbonation is low, even for the style while the palate is rather thin. Undemanding, but clean example.
