Prepare to walk the plank to an Ale of overwhelming proportions. More hops & more malts than any land lubber can handle. After this experience...your tongue will be buckled. The I.B.U.’s (International Bitterness Units) are off the scale on this ale. Be forewarned, those with a timid palate, this is not a wee beer! Handcrafted in small batches for those sailing the seas in search of great ales.

Sharp citrusy grapefruit aroma. Clear rust, thick firm yellow head. Grapefruit, maraschino cherries. Licorice and subtle pine needle at midpalate. Copper penny finish. Full body, easy carbonation, alcohol is quite noticeable, resinous. Nice complexity, good transitions, healthy malt backbone to support the outrageous hoppiness. Probably a very good example of what this style strives to be, but I found it a little much. As a wheat beer fan, 107 IBUs and 10% isn’t what I’m looking for.

On-tap, this pours a dark reddish brown color with a slight head. The aroma is bold and malty. The taste is smooth, delicious, has a hint of caramel. Very interesting flavor and well made.

Strong citrus aromas with a citrus bite up front. Drying and somewhat bitter, like orange peel, with a serious amount of IBUs.

Pours a dark, copper-brown, with good-sized head. Aroma is very floral/citrusy , dank and fresh. Flavor is very bitter, with lots of hop spice and citrus. Tastes like a very strong IPA--quite good, in fact.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy/creamy, off-white, mostly lasting. Body is dark amber. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain, cookie), lightly to moderately hoppy (grapefruit, resin), lightly yeasty (dough). Flavor is moderately to heavily sweet, moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter. Medium to full body, creamy/syrupy texture, lively carbonation, moderately to heavily alcoholic. Looks great, but other than that it’s kind of hard to enjoy. Surprisingly timid aroma for its size, not much going on at all. Caustic and rough and burning in the mouth, though I suppose that is what they were going for based on the name...but that doesn’t make it much fun to drink. Ballast Point is very hit-and-miss, sadly.

Bottle. Cinnamon candy spiciness, red delicious apples, pine sap and grapefruit juice hoppiness in the nose. Medium-full body, sweet with strong bitterness and a raw hop grassiness. Fruity and citric, somewhat alcoholic and strongly spicy. About what you expect of hoppy amber barley wine, there’s nothing wrong with it technically but the aroma and flavor aren’t enjoyable for me.

651 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, thick, well retained, tiny bubbled ivory head, with spare lacing, over a clear, dark amber (SRM 18) body.....nose is heavy American hops with heavy pine, resin, hints of citrus, toasted malts with light biscuit, toffee/caramel, minimal esters, balance to the hops......taste is lightly brown sugar sweet with toffee/caramel notes, then heavy pine, resin, slight citrus, with a lingering heavily bitter finish, balance decidedly to the hops.....mouth feel, medium body, slightly sticky, alcohol warmth quite present, carbonation makes a creamy mouthful. This is a huge hop bomb. The hop back bone is utterly dominant with the malts acting as a minor foil. It tastes good and is quite cleansing as a result of the heavy hop load even in the face of the sweet malts. BJCP 8/3/15/4/7
