Growler filled at DeCicco’s In Ardsley, NY
Nose boldly of hoppy goodness
Pours ruby hued amber, med. tan head, stays and then leaves a thicker collar and plenty of fine lacing.
Dense layers of hops, resins and spruce. Big and bold brew, with complexity and flavor abounding.
Alcohol, character and density of flavors adds up to a quality brew thats well worth seeking out.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Rating #1720 - 2015.06.02 - Bottle from the brewery in San Diego . Clear amber-reddish pour with a bubbly white head, sticky lacing. Aroma is a bucket load of earthy spicy hops. Taste is sticky caramel malty sweetness, with a powerful punch of hop textures. Medium carbonation, mild alcohol warmth, medium bodied. Lots of cool assertive hop flavour in this one, very tasty.

Tap at el Bait Shop. Deep reddish brown body with a khaki head. Nose piney with some toffee. There is also some wood. The taste is definite pine resin with toffee and black tea. A sweeter finish. Bits of black pepper spice in the aftertaste. Big body with warming alcohol. Overall well done.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
From the 650 ml. bottle stamped on the bottom - 16018-13:37. The reddish-amber pour is handsome and it leads up to a long lasting, foamy tan head. I could tell it was Ballast Point because the fruity and pine hop characteristics were prevalent along with a slight barley malt sweetness but no alcohol for 10%. A hint of orange too. The body is medium to full. Barley malt sweetness in the taste almost like a Barleywine but without the sharpness. No booze in the flavor either and a nice, fruity bitter end.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Rich copper and light ruby body with a nice, three centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of rich malt, alcohol, earthy and grassy hops with a distinctly nutty and toffee scent as well. Medium-bodied; Nice robust malty flavour with a lot of grass and deep caramel flavours showing some nice hop bitterness with a bunch of alcohol warmth to finish it off. Aftertaste shows the malt at first with some nuts, earth, caramel, alcohol and of course - a good deal of bright herbal and grassy hops. Overall, a nicely balanced beer, especially for 10% abv, with a lot of sweetness and an assertive malt and deep fruit finish. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Costco in Arlington (Pentagon City), Virginia on 17-January-2016 for US$7,99 sampled at home in Washington on 08-May-2016.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Fairly strong aromas of both hops and malt. Malt aromas include toffee, bread and grain; also just a hint of apricot.. Hop aromas are pine and citrus.
Color is a dark ruby red with a small to average off-white head.
Taste includes a fairly hefty bitterness and plenty of alcohol sweetness.
Medium to full body; alcoholic; average carbonation and a medium to long finish with the toffee and bitterness.
Overall I like the balance between the hops and malt; a big bold beer with plenty of both hops and malt.

On tap at St Augustine’s in Vancouver. A world class imperial red ale, if somewhat overpriced at $7.95 a 14 oz glass. The high hop bitterness is nicely offset with big malt flavors. More later perhaps. 4

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Draught at St. Augustine’s, Vancouver
Hazy red amber color, compact head. Moderate aroma of fruity hops, oranges and other similar fruits, lightly animal too. Bold structure, the sweetness is moderate, not excessive, the malt profile seem to reveal too much Crystal; the bitterness is very strong and the hops come with a quite harsh wood resin, just lightly fruity, and heavily roasted nuts; I find that these beers are almost buttery sometimes.
Aggressive, good, but a bit too much over the top.
