Prepare to walk the plank to an Ale of overwhelming proportions. More hops & more malts than any land lubber can handle. After this experience...your tongue will be buckled. The I.B.U.’s (International Bitterness Units) are off the scale on this ale. Be forewarned, those with a timid palate, this is not a wee beer! Handcrafted in small batches for those sailing the seas in search of great ales.

This brew poured a nice copper color leaving 2 fingers worth of a khaki head and great lacing. The aroma consisted of citrus, light grass, pine and pepper. The taste was a combination of spicy and citrusy, leaving your palate very dry. Overall it was a very pleasant beer and one I would seek out if you’re a hop head.

This is definitely a tongue buckler as the name states. Yuck yuck yuck. Not a Julie beer. She gives 0.1.

Bottle: The aroma consists of citrus/grapefruit hops with lighter caramel, fruit, brown sugar, and a touch of toasty notes. It pours a dark transparent orangish-brown with a touch of haze and a two finger beige head that eventually fades to a thin film. There is a good amount of thin webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick dose of caramel with a touch of brown sugar. The finish moderate grapefruit, pine, faint toasty notes, and barely a hint of alcohol. It’s medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, when I used to think American Strong Ale meant something, this is tasty example of what I thought it meant.

Pours a slightly hazy dark copperish red with of white head. Floral hops notes, some pine, and a bit of grass on the nose; follows onto the palate. Bitter, but good. Gives a little malt on the finish to let you know it’s a red.

Aroma: floral hops, resin, some hay. Appearance: hazy amber, small, creamy, beige head. Taste: light bitter. Palate: intense grains, heavy malts, caramel, getting very bitter, dry finish. Overall: nice American Strong Ale, yet lacking some intensity in aroma. Pint at Ballast Point Brewery, San Diego.

Pours a dirty-hazy red color almost leading towards brown. Thin off-white head with no lacing. Almost no aroma at all, if anything maybe some caramel. Taste is mostly just bitter with some grainy taste. Finish almost has the taste of fish.

Draft at Ballast Point. Pours a deep copper red with an off white head that holds. Nose has caramel, citrus and floral hops. Taste is more citrus with caramel syrup and toffee coming through. Booze hidden well. Fucking great. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

"the version i had, still called Tongue Buckler, was at 10%! and came across as a strong ale/hoppy bw/or sweet double ipa. generoua=sly hopped but candi malty sweet. very good. you could tell the abv was high, but no heat. big body, lasting malty finish with a bittersweet aftertaste."

Big bottle. Poured a reddish brown color. Murky. Aroma is caramel malt syrup, some floral citrus hop aroma, grains, toffee. Heavy bodied. One finger head. Average carbonation. This is big beer with malts, malt sryurp, and hops galore. This tasted old. Hopefull it was b/c I didnt care for it much.

Taster at beerfest - nose is rye ish. Sip adds a grapefruit bomb and it hits me that I haven’t written grapefruit in any of my ratings tonight. Wow! Bitter as all get out. Lovely.

22 oz bottle. Pours red amber with a big creamy off white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is sweet caramel malt blended with green resiny hops.

The flavor is some sweet nutty caramel malts and lots of fruit with tons of piney resiny hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with low carbonation.

Overall, a nice big hoppy red. The alcohol is well hidden.
