Prepare to walk the plank to an Ale of overwhelming proportions. More hops & more malts than any land lubber can handle. After this experience...your tongue will be buckled. The I.B.U.’s (International Bitterness Units) are off the scale on this ale. Be forewarned, those with a timid palate, this is not a wee beer! Handcrafted in small batches for those sailing the seas in search of great ales.

Tap at the Boilermaker, Philly - 24/05/12. Dark amber orange with a small head that soon thins. Pine aroma, toasty malt, hops and grapefruit on the nose. Taste follows on from the nose with sweet caramel malt, citrus hop, sweet candies. Medium bodied with an alcohol kick.

(Tap at Craftworks tap house, Itaewon)
A deep, dark ruby beer topped with a beige head. Smells of well-integrated dusty peach hops, a touch of vanilla, and a few raisins.
In the mouth, those hops are present, in quantity, but - alas - alcohol too, which is clearly present all the way into the finish.
I wanted to like this, but it’s boozy, with not just warming alcohol. At least it’s not sticky, though it gets sweeter with time.
The hops merge with the alcohol and are subsumed by it.
Unusually, Phil did not share this.

hopscotch (9556) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - MAY 16, 2009
Bottle… Clear, deep amber ale with a small, creamy, off-white head. Decent retention. The aroma is a wonderful swirl of pine, caramel and toffee… I mean, lots of caramel and toffee. Full-bodied with barbed carbonation. The flavor is just a ton of earthy, citrusy hop bitterness layered upon huge toffee and caramel malt sweetness. Very malty; very hoppy… almost balances out. Lengthy, bitter, coarse finish that eventually dries out. Bottle provided by WeeHeavySD!

Bottle at JW77’s. Damn this is HOPPY. Holy crap. Reddish pour. Off white head. Aroma is full of harsh citrus hops and christmas tree resin. Flavor is just too damn hoppy. Tons of grapefuit peel, bitter resin and some light malt. Wow hopheads rejoice.

hopdog (9189) - Lansdale, Pennsylvania, USA - MAY 24, 2009
22oz bottle acquired in trade with WeeHeavyHD (thanks!). This one initially poured all head. Settled into a medium to deeper orange color. Aromas of pine, toasty, caramel, and citrus. Tastes of citrus, caramel, a little fruity, pine and floralness. Tastes definitely nice and hoppy but also had a nice balance. Medium alcohol burn in the finish. Lacing left on the glass. Piney hoppy burps.

Sammy (8942) - Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 9, 2013
Bottle from Lueken’s Liquors. A smooth mouthfeel, with an initial maltiness followed by a pleasant citrusy hop finish. Well integrated blend of malt and hops, the perfect imperial red beer. Another master craft from this brewery.

Tap at Churchill’s in San Marcos. Pours a clear amber to near red. Moderate lace. Nose is red fruits, toffee, brown sugar, fruit juice. Hints of sherry. Taste is syrupy, sweet, sticky, moving to sharp tanginess with brown sugar and lemon maple. Lemony and toffee finish. Pretty intensely sticky. Very sharp mouthfeel. Long sticky plus resiny bitter finish. Headache inducing. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dogbrick (8682) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - AUG 22, 2011
Sample on Day 2 of the Aces & Ales Strong Beer Festival on 08/13/2011. This brew pours a dark copper color with a medium off-white head that diminishes steadily. Rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of citrusy hops and toasted malt. Medium body with a moderately bitter hops character that has grass and citrus notes. Sweet malt undertones. The finish is grassy and resiny hops with a lasting bitterness. Good beer overall.
