Prepare to walk the plank to an Ale of overwhelming proportions. More hops & more malts than any land lubber can handle. After this experience...your tongue will be buckled. The I.B.U.’s (International Bitterness Units) are off the scale on this ale. Be forewarned, those with a timid palate, this is not a wee beer! Handcrafted in small batches for those sailing the seas in search of great ales.

Pours deep copper with a one finger white head. Medium lacing. Aroma is wonderful. Doughy bread. Like an early morning bakery. Taste is rich caramel with a bitter end. Chewy. Spicey lingering aftertaste. Excellent.

Pours a burnt amber color with a khaki head and beautiful lacing. Dank, resinous hop, caramel, malt and citrus aroma. Big resinous hop, malt, caramel, toffee and citrus flavors. Medium full body and average carbonation. Very bitter but very well balanced. Caramel and burnt citrus finish.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a tulip glass. Deep ruby red at the top of the tulip, lightening up to a deep reddish gold at the base. Creammy thick head coating the top of the beer, as the head falls, it hold strong at 1/8" for the remainder of the beer’s life. Smell is much more mild, subdued hops, a little pine, sticky buns, bark, burnt sugar. Taste is just out of this world. The hops hit your nose and a little on the front of the taste, big sweet and sugary amber body, a little malt, caramel, then a rush of dry hops. The hops dry off your pallet for a second, then the big ABV gets your pallet to salivate, and moisten up to get you ready to drink more. Hands down the most well thought out Ballast Point beer yet, and the best Imperial red i;ve had. They didnt just overhop the hell out of a standard amber like most. And with 107IBU, I was amazed how somewhat balanced this beer ended up being. Not just a hop bomb which the label might get you to believe. Creamy texture, almost silken. Just very smooth and not too sugary, but enough to stick to your lips. I’m loving it. good job BP!

UPDATED: JUL 29, 2009 (DC Local Gathering, 750ml bottle, Thanks CaptainCougar) – Dark amberish red, white creamy head. Bold pineapple and fresh melon aromas ride a thick underpinning of piney citrus and mild chocolate. Huge piney tropical fruit flavors balance well on a soft chocolate caramel foundation throughout. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, bitter finish. Should have been called tongue numbing….

Pours deep copper with orange hues and a small off white head. Nose is big pine, grapefruit and caramel apples. Taste is perfect balanced sweet and bitter with the finish a little on the bitter side. Mouthfeel is crisp and sticky, big body and a huge finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours opaque red-amber with a thick light tan head. Aroma is sweet malts and faint pine hops. Wow. The malts and hops are on equal footing with this one! The first taste is chalky thick malts. Everything seems to come together in the mid palate - an interesting malt/hop blend. The hops really show in the finish with an insidious bitterness. Awesome red ale!!

22 oz. bottle from Tasty Beverage Company, Raleigh, NC. Deep rusty orange pour with a reddish hue and a thick off-white head. Aroma of grapefruit, wet grass, and light toffee notes. The taste is awesome with bitter grapefruit, pineapple, and tangerine combined with an assertive caramel malt backbone. Somehow this is easily drinkable even with the high bitterness and alcohol. As with many "American Strong Ales" this is not quite a DIPA and not quite a barleywine. Great brew!
