Prepare to walk the plank to an Ale of overwhelming proportions. More hops & more malts than any land lubber can handle. After this experience...your tongue will be buckled. The I.B.U.’s (International Bitterness Units) are off the scale on this ale. Be forewarned, those with a timid palate, this is not a wee beer! Handcrafted in small batches for those sailing the seas in search of great ales.

Just another great addition from another great brewery. The Tongue Buckler kind of comes off as a Barleywine, what with it’s murky brown body and pillowy tan head. The body is full but kind of grainy. Heavy flavors of bitter hops strike their pose on a playful runway of caramel malts. It seems a bit toned down, like a pirate with a dull scabre, but this beer is a solid. Very solid.

Bomber, from Wine Warehouse, I think. Pours hazy brown with a frothy beige head. Aroma of sweet dark fruit, caramel, black tea, orange peel. Flavor is orange peel, dark fruit, burnt caramel malt, grapefruit rind, and finishes with bitter cold coffee.

The red ale to end all red ales! This is definitely an acquired taste and should have been called pallette wrecker. I digress that it is a tongue buckler indeed. Pours a deep, dark Amber with a pillowy white head. The aromas and flavors are devilishly dank hops in harmony with heavenly rich toffee, caramel and sweet cereal. The finish is juicy citrus and sawmill fresh pine.

Draft at Ballast Point. Dark red color. Aroma of malt, candy, caramel and bitters. Taste has bitter toffee, malt, pine, boozy candy and a bitter dry finish. Nice, but a little one-sided.

650 ml. Clear amber-copper with a lasting disc of cream. Big nose of toffee, resin, citrus zest and dark bread. Flavors of toffee, resin, minty green herb and citrus zest. Some dark fruit and wooden-grassy hop on the finish. Medium-heavy body is smooth and slick with medium carbonation and a nice dry slant to balance the big maltiness.

Bottle at home. Aroma is rich malt, caramel, big resinous hops, lots of pine resin, sweet ripe orange. Flavour is medium sweet and nicely bitter with a long bittersweet finish. Slight booziness. Body is medium to full, nicely rich and thick. A bit expensive but rewarding!

California isn’t short on heavily hopped red ales, so it’s lucky I have lots of love to give. Tongue Buckler has an appropriately subtle name for its mild manners. Deep red pour. Rich, creamy suds. Caramel malt and piney hop aromatics. Big flavor profiles coming from both malt and hops. Toffee, pine, and bitter citrus. Alcohol flavoring is entirely hidden, but you’ll definitely feel it after downing a bomber. For anyone who like the whole American Strong Ale / Imperial Red thing, this certainly works.

Bottle. A- Caramel, malty, pine. A- Reddish copper color, hazy liquid, off white head. T- Burnt caramel, malty, medium bitterness, floral spices. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, balanced finish. O- Loads and loads of burnt caramel malts and a touch of floral bitterness. Not bad but equally not all that exciting.

Rating #1720 - 2015.06.02 - Bottle from the brewery in San Diego . Clear amber-reddish pour with a bubbly white head, sticky lacing. Aroma is a bucket load of earthy spicy hops. Taste is sticky caramel malty sweetness, with a powerful punch of hop textures. Medium carbonation, mild alcohol warmth, medium bodied. Lots of cool assertive hop flavour in this one, very tasty.

Tap at el Bait Shop. Deep reddish brown body with a khaki head. Nose piney with some toffee. There is also some wood. The taste is definite pine resin with toffee and black tea. A sweeter finish. Bits of black pepper spice in the aftertaste. Big body with warming alcohol. Overall well done.

From the 650 ml. bottle stamped on the bottom - 16018-13:37. The reddish-amber pour is handsome and it leads up to a long lasting, foamy tan head. I could tell it was Ballast Point because the fruity and pine hop characteristics were prevalent along with a slight barley malt sweetness but no alcohol for 10%. A hint of orange too. The body is medium to full. Barley malt sweetness in the taste almost like a Barleywine but without the sharpness. No booze in the flavor either and a nice, fruity bitter end.
