Prepare to walk the plank to an Ale of overwhelming proportions. More hops & more malts than any land lubber can handle. After this experience...your tongue will be buckled. The I.B.U.ís (International Bitterness Units) are off the scale on this ale. Be forewarned, those with a timid palate, this is not a wee beer! Handcrafted in small batches for those sailing the seas in search of great ales.

Appearance: Deep red, decent head. Smell: Not a lot in the nose. Taste: Sweet and malty. Some toffee. Much more intense flavor than I would have guessed from the aroma. Fairly boozy. Mouthfeel: Medium-ish body. Drinkability: Solid. A bit heavy handed on the maltiness. Not a favorite.

Itís a big arse beer this one by any stretch of the imagination. It is reddish amber in colour with some greyish cream coloured head. It has perfumy apricot and stewed peaches, rosewood and pecans. It has a big oily body with just about every rich plummy flavour previously described. Thereís a bit going on up front, but donít expect much subtlety. It disguises its abv well and has a fairly lengthy finish. And then all of a sudden it doesnít mask its abv so well. What?

Bomber served in a tulip glass. The beer pours a murky reddish brown with a thin off white heas that leaves nice lacing. Aroma is pine, biscuit, and caramel malt. Taste is pine resin, sour citrus, and loads of toffee. There are some bready characteristics as well. It lingers in your mouth a while and has a somewhat sticky feel. Pretty good beer.

Draft at the Old Grove Brewery. Pours dark brown with a fizzy beige head. Tastes like alcohol, coffee, creamy, nutty malt, light chocolate, and spicy hops. Crazy palate. Light/medium body and carbonation. Smells like sweet chocolate, coffee, sweet malt, and light alcohol.

From the bomber into the pint glass. Iím not really clear on this IBU rating, can we be sure whoís making this grading because this beer seems more malty than hoppy. Iíve had way more bitter beers than this with way lower ratings. Is this an established organization making these determinations, and if so shouldnít there be IMUís for maltiness?

Murky ass amber, medium to thin light tan head, spotty lacing. Toffee, earth, resin, light caramel, grapefruit, and a touch of grain. Medium to full bodied, moderate sweetness, lingering, rounded finish.

This is definitely a tongue buckler as the name states. Yuck yuck yuck. Not a Julie beer. She gives 0.1.

Bottle: The aroma consists of citrus/grapefruit hops with lighter caramel, fruit, brown sugar, and a touch of toasty notes. It pours a dark transparent orangish-brown with a touch of haze and a two finger beige head that eventually fades to a thin film. There is a good amount of thin webbing left on the sides of the glass. The flavor starts with a quick dose of caramel with a touch of brown sugar. The finish moderate grapefruit, pine, faint toasty notes, and barely a hint of alcohol. Itís medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, when I used to think American Strong Ale meant something, this is tasty example of what I thought it meant.

Pours a slightly hazy dark copperish red with of white head. Floral hops notes, some pine, and a bit of grass on the nose; follows onto the palate. Bitter, but good. Gives a little malt on the finish to let you know itís a red.

Aroma: floral hops, resin, some hay. Appearance: hazy amber, small, creamy, beige head. Taste: light bitter. Palate: intense grains, heavy malts, caramel, getting very bitter, dry finish. Overall: nice American Strong Ale, yet lacking some intensity in aroma. Pint at Ballast Point Brewery, San Diego.
