3.1 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Appearance: Deep red, decent head.
Smell: Not a lot in the nose.
Taste: Sweet and malty. Some toffee. Much more intense flavor than I would have guessed from the aroma. Fairly boozy.
Mouthfeel: Medium-ish body.
Drinkability: Solid. A bit heavy handed on the maltiness. Not a favorite.

3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a deep orange color with a good head and nice lacing on the glass.
The atom aid big on toffee and sweetness, it’s got licorice, it’s got caramel... it’s got a generally muddled but very prevalent hop character.
The flavor picks up where the aroma left off, big and sweet with lots of alcohol spiciness. It’s big on bitterness, it’s big on caramel, it’s big on those two things clashing.... The hop character isn’t all together bad sort of spicy sort of fruit forward. Licorice, toffee, malt, malt, malt, hops, hops, hops.
This does not restore my faith in Imperial Red Ale, and I don’t know that there is a beer that ever could... not my thing at all. The whole category just seems to be about an onslaught of FLAVORS! and throwing substance to the wind.
That said, if this is the sort of thing you like, Ballast Point did a fine job of presenting this style for what it is worth.

Keg taster @ Brewdog, Leeds. Has a strength, but not too sweet, nor too bitter in my opinion.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a cloudy amber but Has excellent head retention and lacing. Smells sweet and malty with some honey in there. Tastes very malty and sweet, just like an imperial red does. Very good, but not crazy good.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
This was poured into a snifter.
The appearance was a dark red color with a one finger white foamy head. A moderate amount of lacing stuck to the glass nicely.
The smell started off with some sweet caramel malts running into subtle tobacco notes.
The taste had the dried out tobacco-esque flavors blending into the caramel malts. Subtle breadiness seeks a nice balance in this. There’s a quick dried caramel aftertaste.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a decent sessionability about it. Carbonation runs nice for the style and for me.
Overall, I liked it for me as I didn’t mind the extra "tobacco" flavors that came out. I could see myself having this again.

Keg at BD Camden tap takeover, London. It pours a lightly hazed rich golden / copper color with large tan head. Aroma is sweet malts, dark fruits, brown sugar, toffee. Taste has more big sweet malts and some bitter resinous hops and roasted malts. Full bodied with good carbonation. Overall, tasty and bold

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours out a lovely deep amber color with a velvety smooth frothy tan head that settles to a thick lace. Huge hop aromas. Pine and herbal citrus. Flavor starts with a strong roasty backbone followed by lots of grapefruit rind bitterness. Surprisingly smooth and drinkable. Love ambers, although this is a highly pumped-up version.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
IBU bomb. Went to a Ballast Point launch party for their launch into Alberta and they served pints of this! Good god! Pours a dark, ruby amber with a sticky beige head. The nose is hopped up and caramelized with a nice malty base, light fruity notes and tons of citrus and pine notes. Light floral notes and a bit of spice with a crippling bitterness on the finish and a lingering aftertaste of zesty grapefruit.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Had this int he basement 6 months. my first whiff i think “barley wine”—alcohol, resin, toasted (not burnt) marshmallow. (What’s the line between strong and barley wine--if it’s just alcohol level then this is a bwine; if hoppiness is an indicator than i can find plenty of counter examples.) Slightly dark amber clarity & modest off white head. Odd mix of flavors—alcohol, brown sugar, 2 by 4, lime rind. Lighter in weight than expected, but still plenty on the palate. Finish on the sweet side but still pangs of bitter.
