Commercial Description:
Ballast Point Wahoo Wheat Beer is created using the same ingredients that were once used in Belgium. Flaked unmalted wheat, oats and malted barley comprise the grain. The unmalted wheat has a high protein content, which causes the beer to be hazy, thus giving it a cloudy, or "white" appearance. A special yeast gives a refreshing tangy flavor that is different from both the sour Weiss beers of Berlin or the banana and clovey Weizens of Bavaria. The mild hopping allows the unique malts to show through and does not conflict with the subtleties of the citrus spicing. This unique citrus character is created by adding a blend of curacao (bitter orange), sweet orange and coriander to the boil. White beers are light and refreshing, yet provide a complex reminder that interesting high quality beer does not have to be bitter and dark. Ballast Point Wahoo Wheat Beer is the perfect beer for sunny San Diego.

Bottle from Whole Foods in Charlottesville. Tangerine colored pour with a medium head. Aroma of yeast, citrus and a little bit of spice. Taste is wheat with a little bit of spices. Dry taste. Much too thin bodied.

Draft… RBSG ‘08… Hazy, straw-colored ale with a small, creamy, white head. The nose is subtle, but displays spicy and grainy notes with a suggestion of citrus. Light-bodied and watery with tingly carbonation. Mostly nondescript flavor. Thin, watery finish.

On tap @ brewery, RBSG. Light murky straw color with a thin, short-lived off-white head. Lots of orange peel and chalky grain, hint of yeast on the nose. Slightly fruity sweetness, some spice, light grassy finish.

It looks like I got a much better bottle of this that most. Pours hazy light yellow with a smallish white head. The aroma has richness or wheat, dry orange / lemon zest with a hint of coriander. Medium body that is smoother than most wits with carbonation that has sharp and soft traits ~ it’s prickly, but gentle and spreads the flavor well. The flavor starts with wheat and light spice from the coriander along with some phenolic spice and citrus. The finish has a bit more spice and citrus. A good wit.

RBSG 2008, on tap at the brewery. Hazy gold body with a thin white head. Citrus floral nose, soft clove in the spiciness and coriander. Moderate wheat flavor to the body, with a crisp dry finish.

On tap at the brewery during RBSG 08. Cloudy yellow-gold. Big coriander and orange aroma. Taste is sweet and clean, of wheat and coriander. Light lingering crispness. Very refreshing and drinkable.
