Commercial Description:
It is made very much like a pilsner, except that it is fermented at warm temperatures with ale yeast. It is then lagered like a pilsner. It tastes very much like a pils, except for the subdued fruitiness of the ale yeast, the tang of the wheat (in some), and the lack of lager-like sulfur aromas.

So where can you taste a Kolsch? There are no Kolsches being imported into the United States. So you could fly to Cologne. A better idea is to come to Ballast Point Brewing Company and try our Yellowtail Pale Ale Kolsch. We make it with 5% Wheat, finish hop it with Liberty and Tettnanger hops, and ferment it with a yeast we borrowed from a brewery in Cologne. So come on in and enjoy a taste of the Rhineland!!

Bottle: Hazy golden with a dense white film that retains well. Biscuity, buttery malt aroma with a light honeyish presence and some subtle flowery hop notes. Crisp light body- a bit sweet in the flavor, especially for the style. Some mildly buttery pale malts and a touch of biscuity character. Some herbal honeysuckle like flowery hops. Simple and not much like the original style. It’s not clean enough and is slightly under-attenuated for the style.

355 mL. Pours a clear golden yellow with a temporary, pale-lager like white, fizzy head. No retention. No lacing. Aroma is grainy, cereal, lemon, bready malts. Taste is similar: very bland cereal grain, lemon, biscuit. Watery mouthfeel. Very macro-esque. Very poor- especially coming from what was once San Diego’s homebrew emporium.

Poured slightly hazy golden yellow with a white one-finger head and ok lacing. Sweetish caramel malt aromas. Malt flavors up front subsided and gave way to subtle grassy hops. Medium carbonation, and just a touch of sweetness in the aftertaste.

North Shore - Oahu, Hi - Turtle Point Resort - Ola Bar and Grill - 12 oz bottle. Light orange pour, white head. Brief floral aroma. Even, subtle bitterness with some light citrus accents and a little bit of nuttiness. Fades a bit in the finish. Overall, decent.

12oz bottle from Lukas Liquors. Pours lightly hazed golden yellow with small white head. Aroma is bready malts and some light citrus. Flavor reminds me of peanuts at first with some bready malts and citrus. Why put pale ale on the label when you know it is not a pale ale. If I wanted a Kolsh or a wheat beer I would have bought one. For the style it is actually pretty good.

golden yallow, light citrusy beer, not overwhelming, not too hoppy but very enjoyable

Pours a lightly hazy golden orange with a smaller bubbly white head. Aroma of bready malt, lightly toasted nuts and cheerios. Also getting slight lemon, hints of tropical fruits and lightly spicy noble hops. Flavor of bready very lightly toasted malt, some light citrus, floral and lightly spicy hops. Nice and crisp yet fruity.

12 oz bottle. Light pour with crisp white head. Light aroma of earth and maybe the slightest hint of citrus. Thin mouthfeel and just doesn’t have enough flavor for me. Flavor of watered down malts, must, and, again, a hint of citrus hops. Ballast Point is capable of making much higher quality brews
