COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It is made very much like a pilsner, except that it is fermented at warm temperatures with ale yeast. It is then lagered like a pilsner. It tastes very much like a pils, except for the subdued fruitiness of the ale yeast, the tang of the wheat (in some), and the lack of lager-like sulfur aromas.

So where can you taste a Kolsch? There are no Kolsches being imported into the United States. So you could fly to Cologne. A better idea is to come to Ballast Point Brewing Company and try our Yellowtail Pale Ale Kolsch. We make it with 5% Wheat, finish hop it with Liberty and Tettnanger hops, and ferment it with a yeast we borrowed from a brewery in Cologne. So come on in and enjoy a taste of the Rhineland!!

On tap at a San Diego Padres game. Light bodied-yellow color...average white head...lots of carbonation. Aromas of light hops, grassy and a light yeasty sweetness. Taste is thin, watery, slight lemon with some floral hops. Minimal bitterness in a decently crisp finish. Not a bad beer to sip on at a ballgame while eating some nachos.

Serving: from bottle--purchased at Full Throttle Bottles. Aroma: light floral hop. Appearance: average-sized, frothy, off-white, initial head with fair lacing and fully diminishing longevity. Clear, medium yellow body. Taste: lightly acidic initial flavor and finish with average duration. Palate: light body, watery texture and lively carbonation. Overall: not bad.

Ugh. Last time I pick a beer without checking here first. Saw pale ale. Assumed like IPA. Nope. This is a kolsch. Sawdust. Like a stronger Mgd. Good thing it was only in a mixed 6. Drain pour this some bitch.

Gold color with a white head. Aroma is a slight hoppiness and piney. Taste is smooth, just a hint of hoppiness. Nothing great. A blah beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a very pretty clear golden amber with a decent white head. Aroma is not strong, but promises with a little maltiness. Flavor, fortunately, is bolder than the weak aroma, malty with an underpinning of hops.mouthfeel is about average. Not outstanding, but good with lunch.

pours unclear yellow with a small white cap, little retention and lacing. grassy noble german hops, spiciness, hint of citrus if not a lemin zing - lemon pie, fresh cereals and bready malts, some apple and grape juice too, mineral - very chalky, some sulfur, pinch of dirt. moderate carbonation, light body, dry crisp spicy-herbal-grassy finish. interesting..

I am biased against beers labeled as koelsches since they are typically just crappy blond ales w/ a cute name but this is pretty excellent. It is clear pale golden in color and is more or less headless after a minute or so. Nose is bready and slightly herbal. This is a very clean beer for an ale, as is befitting the style, and there is only a hint of fruitiness from the yeast along w/ a touch of sweetness that brings out a lemon note from the hops. It is a crisp refreshing brew that was brewed with skill and an obvious attention to detail. It has a subtlety few craft brewers even attempt let alone succeed at.
