Editor’s Note: Previously known as Yellowtail Pale Ale

The beer that launched Ballast Point. Our original Pale Ale is a rich golden brew, crafted with aromatic German hops and rounded out with a blend of American and Munich malts. While it’s hopped like a lager, we ferment it like an ale to create a smooth, bright taste that has just a hint of fruit and spice. It’s extremely drinkable, like a Kolsch should be, yet complex, like a good craft beer demands.

12oz bottle. Pours golden orange with a foamy white head. Aroma is of Cheerios, wheat, malt, and grass. Taste is of grassy hops, wheat, and grain. Has a very grainy malt backbone. Lingering taste of cereal and malt. Mouthfeel is light. And crisp. Body is light and very carbonated. Clean and tasty. Nothing spectacular, but it’s good.

This pours a clear, golden yellow color with a slight white head. The aroma is fairly grainy. The flavor is very grainy with an unusual bitter finish. I know they list this as a Kolsch style ale but they should really put that in bigger font as people looking for pale ales probably aren’t looking for this taste profile.

This pleasant ale has a medium body and a good malt flavor. It is understated, as are the hops. Overall, this is a pleasant thirst quencher.

From QC. Clear amber pour, thin yeasty white head. Smells of faintly grassy hop, corn. Tastes of woody grassy hop, corn, crystal malt and apple juice. Body is crisp, medium, almost no carbonation, light lemon. Not bad, more malt than I expected, but quite boring.

Bottle from QClub at home. Clear golden amber pour. Crop circle-y head with foamy white bubbles. Aroma is not much - some faint hops, more of just a grassy lager smell. Taste is malty, smooth, relatively rich for the appearance/aroma of the beer. A bit of dank hoppy bitterness but not much. Nothing much going on - a vaguely bitter, quite malty, smooth and sweet pale ale. Almost has the cereal sweetness of a Tsingtao or something.

Very smooth pale ale that has a good hoppy complex and light golden look. You can smell the hops flowing from the beer.
