It is made very much like a pilsner, except that it is fermented at warm temperatures with ale yeast. It is then lagered like a pilsner. It tastes very much like a pils, except for the subdued fruitiness of the ale yeast, the tang of the wheat (in some), and the lack of lager-like sulfur aromas.

So where can you taste a Kolsch? There are no Kolsches being imported into the United States. So you could fly to Cologne. A better idea is to come to Ballast Point Brewing Company and try our Yellowtail Pale Ale Kolsch. We make it with 5% Wheat, finish hop it with Liberty and Tettnanger hops, and ferment it with a yeast we borrowed from a brewery in Cologne. So come on in and enjoy a taste of the Rhineland!!

Not a big fan of this local brew, it feels like homebrew quality with more money.

Nice drinkable beer. Fruity aroma and nice finish. Good hot weather beer and super for Houston weather. Would enjoy with some snacks. First taste of Ballast Point beer

Bottled. I ordered this at Ruby’s on one of the piers in L.A. near Gardena. I expected a pale ale and got a German style helles beer which I did not know that it had a subtitle called Kölsch style. It reminded me too much of a German sweet malt helles. No so my style. Overall drinkable.

Pours gold with a white head. Aroma is bready, wheat and yeast. No discernable citrus notes. Taste is sweet with very mild bitters. Seemed a little bland. It’s a kolsch and I knew that upon opening and it drank well on hot day out in the sun.

This one is really nothing special. Has almost a light lager feel to it, some of that foot funk lager with some malt flavors. A letdown from ballast point, usually I am impressed with the beers I have had from them. The name of pale ale is misleading. This is a kolch, and I am not a fan of the style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

22oz bottle pours clear golden yellow with small head. Nose is soft malty straw, subtle grass, cracker. Taste is smooth medium bodied soft stale grass, grainy cracker malt, corn. Finish is mild bitterness, semi-creamy malt, grass.

Pours clear gold with a white head. Aroma is crisp, some grain, grass, earthy, lemony citrus, mineral, light apple juice, a hint of sulfur. Taste is doughy grain, cracker, lemon, orange, grass, apple seeds, mineral, and light bitterness. Light body, nice carbonation, dry finish. Refreshing. A fair amount of subtle flavors going on, but I imagine this will disappoint people looking for an APA.

19th March 2014 on the terrace of the san Diego Fish Market Bar, sat in the warming afternoon sun. Ordered this thinking it was a Pale Ale! The beer is light golden with a fading white head. Like almost all Kolsch it was almost odourless, this had mild bready notes in the nose but very little else. Refreshing but bland in flavour (again like most Kolsch I’ve tried and I have been to Koln a few times). A sunshine beer with not much going on, some hints of malty sweetness and a weak hop finish is the best I can come up with.

A typical kolsch style beer. Pours a clear golden color with white head. Cereal grains, some citrus, and a little floral note on the nose; follows onto the palate. Finishes with some floral notes.

0.355 bottle. Slightly hazy, orange color and a small, white head. Strong aroma, mostly sweet and sour with yeasty and hoppy notes at the forefront. Taste is sour rather than sweet but it doesn’t offend; citrus and flowers but later emerge some butter, leather, and cellar impressions characteristic for an Altbier. Light to medium body, slick texture, and lively carbonation. Finish is short-lived and also sour. All in all the beer is alright for a Kölsch but in general does not impress.
