COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor’s Note: Previously known as Yellowtail Pale Ale

The beer that launched Ballast Point. Our original Pale Ale is a rich golden brew, crafted with aromatic German hops and rounded out with a blend of American and Munich malts. While it’s hopped like a lager, we ferment it like an ale to create a smooth, bright taste that has just a hint of fruit and spice. It’s extremely drinkable, like a Kolsch should be, yet complex, like a good craft beer demands.

Smells like beer. Golden yellow color. Very mild slightly sweet flavor. Subtle hop finish. Way too quaffable.

Taster at the brewery. Aroma is hoppy, but not these grapefruit-pine hops, more green vegetables. Some hops, light-bodied, some spices. Sweet grains. Kölsch-inspired? Maybe in the sense that the hops in here are not so intensely fruit-aromatic as they often are on the West Coast. And the grainy properties are there.

Draught at Bubba Gump’s in Anaheim. Pours a clear golden with a small white head that laces. Light malt aroma with fruit and caramel. Sweet, mild flavour of malt, caramel and light fruit with a dry finish. Light body with an oily texture and soft carbonation. Simple and refreshing.

Draught at Antenna America. Interesting stuff, kolsch yeast mellows down the hop profile quite a bit and adds some bready edge to the body. Cereals definitely dominate the citrus, can be quite offsetting but a refreshing one anyway.

From 12oz bottle to shaker. Pour us a light gold. Nose is light malt, doughy. Taste is light bodied, sour. Carbonated on the palate. Not much of a pale ale

Why call it a pale ale? I’m confused about this one as I didn’t really read into it and I discover its a Kolsch. It’s a creamy style ale and unique and I’m sure it helped put ballast point on the map but... It’s a bit decieving.

Bottle pours golden with big head retention. Light to medium in body with a very pale color, hop bitterness is medium to low. A somewhat vinous (grape-y from malts) and dry flavor make up the rest.

Can. Dark gold with a thick white head. Aroma is dough and bubblegum. Taste adds some fruity sweetness with an earthy malt finish. Delicate mouthfeel. Really like this.

12oz can 6/9/15 (Jewel Mix A Six)-36° in Shaker-Pours a clear medium golden with a loose small off white head. Aroma of grains and malt. Taste of the same with some hops coming in as well. This light bodied brew is not bad but I don’t like when breweries put a tyle on the package and it isn’t that style.

Rather unassuming Kolsch, drinkable but nothing for it or agin it really. I suppose it was refreshing enough, but I probably won’t reach for one again.

12 oz. bottle into a tulip. Unable to read BP’s dumb ass bottling date. Was marked down so I assume it is at least somewhat old but it’s not an IPA. A: Clear bubbly bright gold pour with a great frothy head. Ample carbonation visible but little lacing. S: Faint vinous hop scent. No malts easily detected in the nose. T: Closely follows the nose. Crisp maltiness with the expected hit of grape wine. Pretty good and certainly true to Kolsch style. Clean dry finish. M: Fizzy and light bodied making this easy drinking and refreshing.Carbonation has a nice texture on the lips. O: Fairly by the book Kolsch. Good and easy drinking. Inoffensive and nice but nothing all too special. If you do enjoy the style though as I do, It is worth a try.
