COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It is made very much like a pilsner, except that it is fermented at warm temperatures with ale yeast. It is then lagered like a pilsner. It tastes very much like a pils, except for the subdued fruitiness of the ale yeast, the tang of the wheat (in some), and the lack of lager-like sulfur aromas.

So where can you taste a Kolsch? There are no Kolsches being imported into the United States. So you could fly to Cologne. A better idea is to come to Ballast Point Brewing Company and try our Yellowtail Pale Ale Kolsch. We make it with 5% Wheat, finish hop it with Liberty and Tettnanger hops, and ferment it with a yeast we borrowed from a brewery in Cologne. So come on in and enjoy a taste of the Rhineland!!

Smells like beer. Golden yellow color. Very mild slightly sweet flavor. Subtle hop finish. Way too quaffable.

12 oz bottle - label reads Ballast Point Pale Ale (no Yellowtail), with different label. Like other reviewers, based on sculpin and other delicious IPAs from Ballast Point, I was expecting a dry hoppy pale ale like stone or drakes from northern california. Instead I get a more full bodied cereal, bready pilsner. I have not had many kolsch’s, and had I been expecting a kolsch, I might be more forgiving. But do I rate this as a kolsch or a pale ale? Pretty good for a kolsch, pretty bland for a pale ale.

Fizzy pale yellow, with thin foamy white head. Aromas of bread/dough, very grainy, with some faint malt. Pretty boring nose. Some sweetness, faint traces of malt, even fainter, if any hops. Very grainy, light-bodied. Usual high carbonation. Pretty bland and lifeless brew.

I really think this beer should be renamed. I bought this beer in lieu of buying Stone Pale Ale. I had no clue I was buying a Kolsch. I am familiar withh Ballast Points big hoppy beers like Big Eye and Sculpin, so I was expecting a big American Pale Ale. To say I am dissapointed would be an understatement. OK, to rate, sorry for the diatribe. Beer pours medium golden color with a big egg white, retained head. Aroma is corn or cereal with some hay. Flavor is mostly sweet. How about an American Pale Ale, Ballast Point?

Solid PA, very drinkable, light and fluffy yet flavorful. I like having a 4% abv beer around and this one is one of the better ones I have had. Could use a little more hops and intensity, but a great summer beer nonetheless. Solid.

so this isn’t a pale ale - was wondering why there were no hops - why do you call a beer something it isn’t?? overall an easy drinking session beer - this brewer’s beers all have good chewy thick (for style) palates/mouth feels.

Originally reviewed: 7/27/09. This beer pours a clear gold with a good-sized 2-finger head on top. Decent retention leaves some pretty lacing spots and rings. Smells of grassy hops, and buttery grains. The mouth is crisp with a medium-high amount of carbonation. Flavor is of buttered biscuits finished with a sharp hop bite. This is one of the more refreshing beers I’ve had this summer. This will be a regular for barbecues and ballgames.

Bottle from Market Street. Pours a piss yellow with a thin white head. The aromas are skunk, lemon, bread. The mouthfeel is dry, bitter and has a light body and good carbonation. Didn’t care for this one. Cheers!

Pours gold with a white head and sweet aroma of malt. Taste is of sweet malts and grains, very light, with a malty finish. Very light, drinkable, refreshing brew but pretty bland.

Pours a hazy colored golden yellow, with a wispy head. Aroma is fruity and sweet. Taste is flat, grainy and watery. Finish is nothing to speak of. Average at best, maybe just not my style ! Quaff Score 4 /10, but it is drinkable and a good thirst quencher at best.

Bottle, Poured a clearish orange with med carb. Small, white head with sporadic lacing. Aromas of pine, grapefruit, skunky hops, balanced malt bill. Taste is citrus dominat with a earthy hop bite. Refreshing IPA. Underrated.
