Editor’s Note: Previously known as Yellowtail Pale Ale

The beer that launched Ballast Point. Our original Pale Ale is a rich golden brew, crafted with aromatic German hops and rounded out with a blend of American and Munich malts. While it’s hopped like a lager, we ferment it like an ale to create a smooth, bright taste that has just a hint of fruit and spice. It’s extremely drinkable, like a Kolsch should be, yet complex, like a good craft beer demands.

Can from Brewdog on-line. Pale gold with slim white head. Aroma of bread, hay, grass, citrus. Smells somewhat German. Similar in the taste, sweet and dry and hoppy, nice and refreshing. Very good.

12 oz. bottle pours a clear golden color with one-finger heat that sticks around a while and leaves some patches of lacing. Aroma is hay, bread, and some citrusy hops. Taste is slightly to moderately sweet a short, hoppier finish. Body is light with slight carbonation and a crisp mouthfeel. I was expecting an American Pale Ale, not a Kolsch when I saw the label. Still, this is decent for a Kolsch (far from my favorite styles). I might try it again, but won’t go out of my way to find it.

Clear golden color, forming just a small amount of white head. Aroma is bready with some citrusy hops. Reminds me of a good helles lager. Taste follows the nose with the same helles vibe, just a bit more bitter and hoppy. Body is really smooth. Very nice, easy to drink beer. Fits its description perfectly.

Bottle->SA. Lite copper with moderate frothy white head. A: lager malt, grains, grass. T: same, with metallic notes and some corny notes. Not a fan.

Golden brew with decent head and smells of mostly malts with a touch of floral. Pretty well balanced brew that lets the malts and hops be really tasted but not one overpowering the other. Very chuggable brew but for the price not recommended. Decent brew but for the price would have liked it to be more exciting instead of boring and plain.
