COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Editor’s Note: Previously known as Yellowtail Pale Ale

The beer that launched Ballast Point. Our original Pale Ale is a rich golden brew, crafted with aromatic German hops and rounded out with a blend of American and Munich malts. While it’s hopped like a lager, we ferment it like an ale to create a smooth, bright taste that has just a hint of fruit and spice. It’s extremely drinkable, like a Kolsch should be, yet complex, like a good craft beer demands.

Love me some Ballast Point Brewing... Pours a hazy gold with a white head. Aroma is pleasant: caramel, bread, some resin, light floral, dough, some alcohol, some banana, hints of smoke and vanilla.Taste is nicely balanced... light body, thin feel, oily feel, average carbonation, slightly bitter finish. I enjoyed this brew paired wit a steak salad and it went along quite nicely. Much better than the Alaskan Summer I had just befo. Keepin’ it gangsta.

Bottle poured a crystal clear golden hue w/ enormous rocky white head. Moderate straw aroma. Initial flavor is light sweet w/ a moderate bitter finish of short duration. Tastes are straw and bread; sure tastes like a lager. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel and lively carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Compared to other pale ales, it’s a step richer and deeper. It’s probably one of the most complex simple pale ales I’ve had, with a nice balance of grassy light malts and sharp, dry hoppiness with a bit of sourness, but unfortunately it’s not something I’ll reach for when I’ve got so much else to choose from.

Pours a clear orange color with a thin white head which is gone in an instant.....aroma of very little, sweet maltiness.......taste is bread, tailing off to very light bittering.....no hoppiness to note, little bitterness, little flavor.....just sort of beer.

UPDATED: DEC 22, 2014 12 oz bottle from Best Damn Beer Shop. Light bodied, yellow color with white head. Aroma of light hops, grass and a slight yeasty sweetness. Taste is slightly malty with lemon and minimal hops bitterness in a pleasantly crisp finish. Good carbonation. Not heavy. Not skunky. Not sweet. Extremely light, clean and refreshing.

Aroma of malts, grains, summer spices, and fresh cut lawn. Flavors are similar. Clean and crisp palate. Not a pale ale but a decent kolsch.

BOD 177/14. Pours a clear light amber (golden). Above average head volume, excellent lacing and retention. Light nose of fruity esters and yeast over a biscuit base with a hint of spice. Almost light medium body with a nice slick texture. Slightly below normal carbonation with just a touch of effervescence in the finish. The flavor profile is quite nice for a Kolsch. Above average intensity for the style, well balanced and fairly complex. It begins with a mix of light fruit (banana, pear) that flows into a somewhat crisp biscuit sweetness. The middle is a very mild hop bitterness that is herbal in nature that yields to a slight note of pepper like spice. The finish is a slow fade of herbal bitterness and biscuit that ends with a touch of dryness.

Can (12 oz). Bought @ Winooski Beverage Warehouse. Should be approximately 1½ month old.

Appearance: Clear golden with a medium quickly diminishing off-white head and some lacing.

Aroma: Pils malt, some fruitiness, light herbal presence and metallic notes.

Taste: Cereals, light fruitiness, herbal notes and metallic presence.

Palate: Light to medium body. Moderate/medium carbonation. Watery mouthfeel. Metallic finish.

Overall: So boring and generic that’s it’s not even easily drinkable. Extremely disappointing take on a Kölsh from a usually good brewery.

Can 12oz. Pours clear golden with low-medium light beige head. Good lacing. Aroma is of fruits, flowers, malt. Taste is of fruits, flowers, bitterness. Palate: Light body. Medium-high carbonation. Overall: Ok. I would have liked more hops. This beer, complex? Not in my opinion. Still decent, but I would not buy it again.

Pours a clear golden with a thin white head that leaves some lacing. Nose is of grain and fruits, lightly spicy. Full-on pilsener malt. Taste is lightly sweet and crackery, pretty much a pale lager. Not sure why but I was expecting a pale ale... maybe they should make their packaging a little clearer that it is a kölsch after all. Body is light and carbonation high and prickly. It is never watery, though. Overall a fair kölsch I guess...
