COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
It is made very much like a pilsner, except that it is fermented at warm temperatures with ale yeast. It is then lagered like a pilsner. It tastes very much like a pils, except for the subdued fruitiness of the ale yeast, the tang of the wheat (in some), and the lack of lager-like sulfur aromas.

So where can you taste a Kolsch? There are no Kolsches being imported into the United States. So you could fly to Cologne. A better idea is to come to Ballast Point Brewing Company and try our Yellowtail Pale Ale Kolsch. We make it with 5% Wheat, finish hop it with Liberty and Tettnanger hops, and ferment it with a yeast we borrowed from a brewery in Cologne. So come on in and enjoy a taste of the Rhineland!!

12 oz bottle served in a pint glass (from Feb. 2011 notes). Small amount of sediment at bottom of the bottle added mid-tasting. Near clear golden liquid with a substantial amount of fine-grained carbonation visible. Small white head has moderate retention. More lacing than expected, given the head. Smells like a malty lager, albeit with a fruitiness that is much more characteristic of ales. The flavor is not as expected. Both the aroma and the "pale ale" labeling led me to expect something with much more hop flavor, but there’s only a rather subtle touch of spicy hops in the taste. If I hadn’t tried the beer before seeing the description "crafted in the style of the Kolsch beers of Cologne, Germany" I would have been surprised. This beer is mild in flavor, as per the kolsch style. In fact, I had a quite similar, but perhaps even less flavorful kolsch last weekend at the Pisgah (NC) Brewery. It has a nice, if near watery, mouthfeel with excellent carbonation and some dryness in the finish. Slightly bitter balance, yet more malt than hop flavor. O - a highly drinkable and refreshing beer. Plenty flavorful for the kolsch style.

Bottle @ home while brewing: Pours clear golden with white head and medium carbonation. Aroma contains grain, bread, hay, grass and some floral/fruity notes. light body, medium bitterness and dry finish, overall refreshing, but not all that you would expect from a US pale ale.

Bottled. I ordered this at Ruby’s on one of the piers in L.A. near Gardena. I expected a pale ale and got a German style helles beer which I did not know that it had a subtitle called Kölsch style. It reminded me too much of a German sweet malt helles. No so my style. Overall drinkable.

Pours gold with a white head. Aroma is bready, wheat and yeast. No discernable citrus notes. Taste is sweet with very mild bitters. Seemed a little bland. It’s a kolsch and I knew that upon opening and it drank well on hot day out in the sun.

This one is really nothing special. Has almost a light lager feel to it, some of that foot funk lager with some malt flavors. A letdown from ballast point, usually I am impressed with the beers I have had from them. The name of pale ale is misleading. This is a kolch, and I am not a fan of the style. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
