Commercial Description:
It is made very much like a pilsner, except that it is fermented at warm temperatures with ale yeast. It is then lagered like a pilsner. It tastes very much like a pils, except for the subdued fruitiness of the ale yeast, the tang of the wheat (in some), and the lack of lager-like sulfur aromas.

So where can you taste a Kolsch? There are no Kolsches being imported into the United States. So you could fly to Cologne. A better idea is to come to Ballast Point Brewing Company and try our Yellowtail Pale Ale Kolsch. We make it with 5% Wheat, finish hop it with Liberty and Tettnanger hops, and ferment it with a yeast we borrowed from a brewery in Cologne. So come on in and enjoy a taste of the Rhineland!!

A- Pours a golden orange color with a small one finger head that fades pretty quick leaving no trace. Appears to be pretty heavily carbonated. S- Slightly sweet, hoppy smell. I get the smallest hints of raspberry in the nose. T- Full grain taste with a bit of hops. Not at all bitter which I was expecting it to be. Very mild and unimpressive, not completely watered down but not full of flavor at all. M- The mouthfeel is fairly viscous, chalked full of carbonation. D- You would think with the inoffensive taste this brew would be pretty drinkable but I find myself not wanting to ever pick up another glass after the first. It only seems a bit better than something i’d pick up in a cheap 18 pack at the liquor store, quite dissapointing for a craft brew.

12oz. bottle. Crackery, doughy, grainy malt aroma, along with tinges of herbal hop here and there. Clear light-medium golden in color with a fine, subsiding head. Flavor is likewise predominantly malty, cereal-like and very lightly sweet, along with tinges of lemony citrus and spicy, leafy hop bitterness, finishing dry and malty. Palate is thin and moderately effervescent, Certainly quite easy to drink, if fairly dull. I’m a bit confused as to how this could ever be considered a Pale Ale, though, seems to be a pretty obvious misnomer.

12oz bottle. The aroma was of citrus fruit (especially lemon) and biscuity malt. Kind of like a lemon scone. There was also a whiff of noble hops. Poured a clear golden color. The head was fluffy and white with good retention and lacing. Delicately sweet and light bodied with a distinct noble hop flavor accompanied by the aforementioned biscuity malt. Refreshing.

22 oz bomber. Rating this one on memory from the weekend. I think it’s okay that I didn’t take notes on this one because there wasn’t much to take notes on. Poured a thin golden yellow with an unimpressive head. Weak aroma of some sort of watery hops and weak dusty grains. Flavor was about as good as the aroma. It wasn’t offensive or bad it just never really came into it’s own to stand out. Skip this and get something good.

Bottle from Beer Run in Charlottesville. 2-finger head sits atop an orange-amber pour. Aroma is very corny with some sweetness and sweaty grain. Taste is grain, honey, green apple, and a touch of bitterness. Medium body.
