Editor’s Note: Previously known as Yellowtail Pale Ale

The beer that launched Ballast Point. Our original Pale Ale is a rich golden brew, crafted with aromatic German hops and rounded out with a blend of American and Munich malts. While it’s hopped like a lager, we ferment it like an ale to create a smooth, bright taste that has just a hint of fruit and spice. It’s extremely drinkable, like a Kolsch should be, yet complex, like a good craft beer demands.

Bottle from Sam’s Quik Shop in Durham. Pours darker golden, clear with a small white head. Nose is grain and honey, not much else. Not much hop action. Taste is sweet and uncomplicated.

Clear golden color, forming just a small amount of white head. Aroma is bready with some citrusy hops. Reminds me of a good helles lager. Taste follows the nose with the same helles vibe, just a bit more bitter and hoppy. Body is really smooth. Very nice, easy to drink beer. Fits its description perfectly.

Its has a good color, aroma and taste but be careful after drinking a pineapple cider.

Bottle->SA. Lite copper with moderate frothy white head. A: lager malt, grains, grass. T: same, with metallic notes and some corny notes. Not a fan.

Golden brew with decent head and smells of mostly malts with a touch of floral. Pretty well balanced brew that lets the malts and hops be really tasted but not one overpowering the other. Very chuggable brew but for the price not recommended. Decent brew but for the price would have liked it to be more exciting instead of boring and plain.

Poured a clear golden color with a small fluffy white head. Aroma was light grains, some bready malts, sweet light citrus. Flavor was some light sweet malts, light citrus. Easy drinking.

The occasions I’ve had this brew have been far and few. Each time I read the label, already-inebriated or not, it still perplexes me. Original "pale ale" or kolsch? Which is it? I dared another attempt. 12oz pour to Teku, a sunny orange with a lightly gripping head. Nose is dominated by aromas reminiscent of a kolsch (unless my slightly runny sinuses deceive me). Nose is draped in noble hops, little bit of banana, little bit of bread. Flavor is clean with delicate sweetness, harmless hop-bite, a tiny bit bready, clean finish. I can endlessly swirl, sniff, sip, swish, repeat; still no solid answer. I admire a style-bending beer, but this is simply a medium-caliber brew from an adventurous west coast scene. Maybe I’ll pick up another one 6 months from now, just for kicks.

12 oz bottle poured. So this is the original pale ale.. Pours a light clear golden color with with a lasting head. Sweet lemon hop like aroma. Light grainy flavor with a cool finish. Very lager like. A little fruity. Drinks easy. Not bad.
