Editor’s Note: Previously known as Yellowtail Pale Ale

The beer that launched Ballast Point. Our original Pale Ale is a rich golden brew, crafted with aromatic German hops and rounded out with a blend of American and Munich malts. While it’s hopped like a lager, we ferment it like an ale to create a smooth, bright taste that has just a hint of fruit and spice. It’s extremely drinkable, like a Kolsch should be, yet complex, like a good craft beer demands.

Bottle. Pours an attractive gold with a high pillowy head. Nose is mild with bready and savory notes. Fruity and savory up front, with a rich dry close. Good drinking beer.

Bottle from a mix-pack. Pours out a clear light golden color with fine carbonation. Biscuit malt aromas and flavors. Low hopping. Thin body. Very boring.

I’ve had a lot of Koelsch beers, and this seems to be in that style, but given way more love. Seems a little darker than a Koelsch. Appears they were trying to make a legitimate German Pale Ale, and if that were a style category, this one would be the standard. Smells like "beer". Crisp, a bit fruity. Taste is similar. Just delicious. If I lived in an area where this was available, this would be my "go to" beer.

Really enjoyed this beer, slightly hazy on the pour. Crisp, a bit too bitter on the finish, but definitely a favorite.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 5/30/2014. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy golden color with a 2 finger dense and rocky white head with great retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lemon, pear, apple, wheat, cracker, bread, herbal, straw, grass, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance of pale malt, earthy hops, and yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of lemon, pear, apple, wheat, cracker, bread, herbal, straw, grass, and yeast earthiness. Light earthy herbal bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon, pear, apple, wheat, cracker, bread, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice robustness and balance of pale malt, earthy hops, and yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. A fairly clean finish as well with no overly estery yeast notes present. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, fairly crisp, and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with no warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice kolsch style. All around good balance and robustness of pale malt, earthy hops, and yeast ester flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

A little too pale in color and taste for me. More carbonation than hops. A little sweet. Might be a good lawnmower beer.

Pours hazy bright gold with frothy white head. Citrusy, fruity nose. Taste follows the nose. high carbonation, some sweet flavours. Was expecting much more.

355 ml bottle, from Fakta Hirtshals. BB date is hard to read, but is possibly Febr. 2014. Pale golden colour, slightly hazy. Low white head. Yeasty aroma, notes of slightly stale jam / marmalade. The flavour is moderately spicy and herbal with hints of citrus. Dry finish.

Bottle poured a crystal clear golden hue w/ enormous rocky white head. Moderate straw aroma. Initial flavor is light sweet w/ a moderate bitter finish of short duration. Tastes are straw and bread; sure tastes like a lager. Medium bodied, creamy mouthfeel and lively carbonation. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
