APPEARANCE: a beautiful deep amber with a mostly lasting thin tan head.
TASTE: slightly sweet with notes of roasted malts, nuts, bread, and toasty finish
MOUTHFEEL: medium bodied with minimal carbonation - smooth - slighlyt watery at the end.
OVERALL: while enjoyable, not a go to beer - bland

500ml bottle from Mini Mix, Barcelona (€1.05):
This one was an okay offering from the Baltika brewery without being the best from them that I’ve tried thus far. There was a nice sweetness to proceedings & I quite enjoyed the sticky patches that showed with the beer thanks to the caramel malts & sugars. Overall the balance was good & it was definitely an enjoyable beer but it just didn’t seem to grab me.

Vermelha escura, quase marrom, límpida. Espuma bege, fina, média de média duraçăo. Ameixas, caramelo e mel no nariz. Na boca, ainda, madeira, malte torrado e um pouco e defumado. Sabor adocicado com um pouco de torrado levando a uma leve acidez. Sensaçăo ácida na língua devido ŕ fina carbonataçăo. Corpo médio.

From a bottle bought in Los Angeles. Poured in a North Coast chalice...pours light brown with head and lace. Aroma of light malts, caramel, minerals, industrial cleaner. Medium carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of brown malts, caramel malt, carob, grains, minerals, straw hops, hay, slight peat. Overall fairly rich with a modest malt body, yet some unpleasant and bitter components.

oured from a 16.9 OZ bottle into a pint glass. The appearance is a dark brown with some reddish highlights. The pour creates a small white head. The aroma is wheat, caramel malt and fruit. The taste is a perfect match for the aroma. A good beer.

After running a half marathon, a good way to get liquid. The rest, a lager with no pretensions but with taste, color and aroma, not as bad as the Spanish commercial beers that are a mess insufferable.

Allegedly the first Baltika beer, a Dunkel with rye malts. Pale yellowish beige, thin, moussy head only retaining well on the edges, over a completely clear (filtered) deep coppery brown beer, translucent with bright burgundy hue and some sparkling. Aroma of dry walnuts, damp cloth, toffee, a disturbing chicken soup and cooked meat odour representing unmistakable pasteurization, dried tomato, soggy tea bags, toasted (rye?) bread, old caramel candy, dried autumn leaves, haemoglobin, roasted peanuts, moist grass. Subduedly sweetish onset of burnt sugar and caramel but no esters (as expected from a lager), minerally, smooth and thin, slick body with soft carbonation even for this style, caramelly and nutty malt sweetishness with a toasted bitterish edge next to a fairly strong metallic ’zing’ disturbing a bit and reverberating in the background; there is some ’rye spiciness’ in here somewhere, but it is the caramelly maltiness which prevails. Finish is a continuation of this, but with the addition of a dash of herbal, almost tea-like, very lightly spicy hops accentuating the toasted bitterness and lingering for a brief while; the burnt sugar or caramel ’bitterish sweetness’, however, remains in the throat. Very industrial interpretation of the ’Münchener Dunkel’ or tmavé style, suffering from the dead, cooked smell and taste of strong pasteurization and feeling very artificial. This is not my favorite style to begin with even among lagers (even though I respect it as being the oldest of all lager styles), but most other examples I had of it, were better and more ’natural’ than this. Seems Baltika Porter is still the only Baltika beer which is more or less worthwile - but that is another beer and therefore another discussion.
