COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A traditional dark beer based on old recipes. "Baltika" brews this beer with the best dark and light malts with the addition of superior hop types and a special strain of yeast. Crystal-clear water and the secret touch of "Baltika"'s brewers make this a beer of unsurpassable quality.
The ingredients are water, caramel malt and burnt roasted malt, maltose syrup and hops. 17°

First few sips were of a full bodied roasty Porter. After that I did notice more of a taste of alcohol, and port, as mentioned below.

500ml bottle poured into an English Pint at 39°. Color is a near black brown with good carbonation and a very thin somewhat fizzy tan head. Aroma is sugary sweet with a note of lightly roasted malt. It has a thin medium body with a watery mouth feel. Flavor is sweet, a bit of chocolate, light roasted malt and toffee. In the after taste the sweet hangs on. Overall I don’t like it, too thin and sweet.

Pours extremely dark and thick with minimal head. Some roasted aromas to it with a thick drink and slightly roasted flavors. Good porter and not a light drink.

Good chocolatey burnt flavor. There is a mild smell that supports the sweet molasses taste.

0.5l bottle traded with ELDesmadre. My first ever Russian! This is a black colored beer with a big but fading tan chocolate head. On the aroma I get sweet and malty tones, some hints of roasted malts, a bit of cardboard, some caramel and perhaps even some light grassy - near herbal hints as well. In the flavor I find lots and lots of salty licorice! It’s so extremely present, and that’s something I’m quite found of. It’s also light sweet and roasted, some cold coffee mixed with chocolate. Also a faint hint of something wet. A dog perhaps? But it somehow does not interrupt the overall good flavors in this one. Ends with more of that distinct salty licorice - lingering. Quite a tasty surprise this! 21.04.2012

500ml bottle, served in pint glass. Roasty anda caramel aromas. Pours really dark, with some amber notes. Good brown head, some persistance, average lacework. n mouth tastes roasty, some hints of caramel, with oily texture, almost creamy. Medium body, not so carbonates. Long roasty and creamy finish.

April 2010: New ’sexy’ shaped bottle, picked up from a Russian shop in Antwerp! Poured into a Westmalle chalice twice: Looked lovely, deep, darkest ruby red, black in colour unless held up to the light. The tan coloured head was thin at first, then even thinner to give a wisp and collar very quickly, soon there was no head or collar. The first smell was of licquorice, then coffee, then dark chocolate. The flavours in the taste followed very closely to the aromas, but a whole lot sweeter. Not creamy or really heavy, a strange body feel really, the 7% ABV is there, but it doesn’t push to the fore, nor does it arrive late on, it’s just ’there’. Different, but not the best Baltic Porter I’ve had by a long way.

Originally reviewed: 1/22/09. Pours an absolute jet black with just a touch of ruby on the edges. Large tan head right off the bat, but this disappates to a thin sheet quickly. No lacing whatsoever. Smells of cherries, wine, some roasty cocoa, and strawberries? Interesting to say the least. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, just how I like my porters. Easily drinkable. 7.0% ABV is masked well, as I feel I could drink plenty of these. The flavor on this one is fairly blah. It’s not bad, but it’s just weak and ho-hum. No bite or aftertaste. Just a nice roasty, nutty, scant chocolately taste. I’ve had better, but at the price ($2.99 for a 19oz.) it’s not a bad buy. Recommend.
