3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 BMan1113VR (6146) - Los Angeles, California, USA - FEB 11, 2008
Aroma is heavy chocolate with some roasted malts and light hops with some nutmeg, brown sugar and a dash of soy sauce. Pours with a large brown head that covers an extremely dark brown body (practically black). Taste is for the choclate lovers, it is extremely sweet throughout with lots ’o chocolate! There is a pretty decent alcohol presence. Creamy body and lively carbonation round out this suprisingly good Russian brew.

Dark brown with a light brown head. First Russian beer I’ve had. Great flavor with a uniques aftertaste.

Reddish brown with a slowly diminishing light tan head. Aroma of caramel, roasted malts and coffee. Taste of caramel, chocolate, raisons and mild alcohol. Medium body is smooth and creamy but it was a step below some of the better Baltic porters I’ve had recently.

I’m pretty sure I bought this bottle for $1.99, so that alone is worth a few points in the rating... black pour and generous foamy tan head, though it doesn’t last very long. Roasty coffee/caramel aromas with hint of chocolate. More of the same on the palate with a little bit of hops kicking in. A little sweet, perhaps, but a very solid beer. Definitely a good deal.

Very nice porter, sweet and roasty. The beer pours a deep, dark brown. It’s just barely translucent with a beige head. The aroma is a bit underwhelming with some cheap, simple malt smell that happily doesn’t come through much in the flavor. The flavor is well-balanced, particularly for a porter, a style that a lot of breweries tend to take too far, in my opinion. There’s an excellent roasted malt note, burnt without getting too harsh. The malt is also sweet with caramel and fruit. This is a calmer, more drinkable Baltic Porter than most from American breweries. I have no idea, really, but imagine it to be closer to the historical roots of the style. It’s a very nice beer that doesn’t try to be too much.

500 ml bottle. Pours black with a medium-sized light brown head. Roasted malty aroma with some chocolate and coffee. The flavour is sweetish. roasted, malty, with liquorice, chocolate and a roasted, mildly bitter finish.

Pours very dark red with a light head. Aroma and flavor are pretty much just roasted malts. Some black pepper in the flavor. Pretty nice.
