3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Syd (920) - Waconia, Minnesota, USA - NOV 2, 2003
UPDATED: OCT 6, 2007 Bottle pours black with a monstrous brown head and prolific lace. The aroma is of roasted malt and dried fruit. The flavor is very nice. The flavor starts out with nice soft malt and progresses through to a slightly bitter coffee; somewhere in between it resembles an Imperial Stout. I also sense a slight hint of a lactic sugar in there. The palate is decent and works well for the flavor. Overall, I’m quite impressed. Update on 10/6/2007 - I’ve not had this beer since I rated it in 2003. It is far sweeter than I remember. It seems to have lost some of the dried fruit character. It gained in the chocolate department. I guess it has lost some complexity. I still like it, but not so much.

Pours a clear black (dark ruby when held up to light) with a thick, beige head. Sweet caramel and roastiness in the nose. Pleasantly sweet with a strong presence of caramel then comes notes of roasted malt, chocolate and coffee. Some roasty, hoppy bitterness shows up in the finish. Alcohol content very well hidden. Medium bodied with a very smooth texture and moderate, fine beaded carbonation - quite appropriate for the style. Enjoyable.

Bottle. Dark body with a thin head. Notes of coffee, grapes, CO2, and dry hops. Very very sharp taste. The finish is full of roast and metal. That costs it points. Sweet like grape juice. Not too bad.
