While on a run to get something for a trade this caught my eye. Figuring the worst case scenario was that it was a drainpour I took a risk on the $1.79 bottle. It turned out to be one of the better values that I have found. On par with many of the other baltic porters (or imperial porters) in the world it is also the cheapest one. This will make it a great standby for those times when I don’t want to open anything rare.
Aroma / Appearance - The deep black body swirled fluidly around the snifter leaving a khaki colored head in its wake. Licorice, peanut brittle and flat Cherry Coke merge into a sweet smelling blend that reminds me of vending machine chocolate in a smoky bowling alley.
Flavor / Palate - Blackberries and plums hit the tongue almost immediately. After settling they become licorice, chocolate chip cookies and ash. The finish reverts to licorice before slowly fading away on the back of the throat. Everything is reasonably balanced and very fluid. This is one of the best ’cheap’ beers that I have tried. Since the risk is so low why not give it a shot? KimJohansen (2460), Copenhagen V, Denmark Jul 23, 2008 Black with medium beige head. Sweet aroma with hard roasted malt, caramel, coffee, liquerice and smoke. Somewhat dry flavor with hard roasted malt, liquerice, coffee and alcohol notes. Dry finish. BeerBaron617 (80), Novi, Michigan, USA Jul 22, 2008 I’ve just poured a 22oz bottle into my big beer glass, and I must say, I wasn’t expecting this to be that good, but I was surprised. Very nice chocalatey aroma with a flavor to match. Also has some sweetness to it. Very nice! pj1855 (19), Eagan, Minnesota, USA Jul 17, 2008 Black with hints of red.
