From Combini. In Bavaria glass. Playing Magic Duels. The typical notes of hefes are here a bit lower than usual but present. Its also Less sweet than usual, which is good in myopinion. It has a Slight metallic touch that far from spoiling it, it even improves it together with the lower sweetness. Its really very drinkable. More foam than appropiate that forces to serve it in 2 steps.

Originally rated 12/12/08. As with all the baltikas this one turned out better than expected. Aroma was average with hints of wheat, banana, corriander, and spice. Flavor was a little stronger with the wheat, corriander and spices, and it left a plesant aftertaste. Good mouthfeel smooth but with a slight carbonation bite, overall i thought it was a pretty decent wheat

BOTTLE 50 CL. Cloudy amber, big creamy head. Fine clean fruity aroma, a bit tart but not that spicy. Not very strong but certainly true to style. The taste has some muted fruit, weizen spicy tartness and a pinch of .. salt? Again, not very spicy. Not spectacular, but surely a decent weizen.

500 ml bottle. Pours nice amber-gold colour and medium foam. Medium carbonation. Cereals smell, especially wheat and a slow sweet taste. Overall a good wheat beer.

From a bottle into a BJ’s Wheat glass. Pours gold-amber with big head and lace. Aroma of a banana soda. Medium carbonation and mouthfeel. Flavors of light grains, malt, banana, minerals. Overall light in body with significant banana notes...so so.

As Baltika 8 Wheat Beer Premium, bottle from a Russian shop in Groningen. Very thick and dense but regularly shaped, egg-white, thickly ’membranous’ lacing head over an immediately misty peach blonde beer with orangey hue. Aroma of very strong banana and banana-flavoured bubblegum, ripe plum, powder sugar, industrial honey, lots of red apple, stewed rhubarb acetaldehyde, minerals, old bread, white cabbage, paper, soapy wheat but nothing of the clove-like phenols that make a true Bavarian Hefeweizen great. Sweet onset, very much dominated by banana and bubblegum isoamylacetate, very spritzy carbonation (overcarbonated even for the style) numbing the tongue and ’souring’ a bit, minerally, a bit chalky even, soft and fluffy bready middle while the banana sweetness persists relentlessly, soapy wheat clearly present and even ahead of the bready barley, becoming a tad less sweet towards the end - but in fact more neutral, with the wheat and barley fading away ingloriously, though a brief, faint grassy hop touch tries to rear its head far away at the back. Chalky and banana-like effects linger along with an unmistakable ’dull’ wheat sourishness. Quenching alright, but it does feel a bit industrial and more importantly, lacks all of the finesses found in Bavarian Hefeweizen. This is heavily banana-laden to the point where it becomes a mundane parody of the style, like e.g. the Dutch Weissbier examples I had. I know banana flavours are inherent to the style but this is ridiculous - where are the spicy phenols, where is the elegant breadiness, why is this overcarbonated to the point of becoming almost soda-like? Then again, what did I expect from a Russian Weissbier... To Baltika standards, or Russian standards in general, I guess this is not undrinkable, but this is by no means a satisfying Hefeweizen either. I also think this was pasteurized (cooked to death, in other words) and then resaturated and made cloudy with added starch - again, as is likely the case in the Dutch Hefeweizen caricatures coming from Grolsch (under SAB Miller) or Brand (under Heineken) as well.

500ml bottle from Mini Mix Russian shop, Barceloneta, Barcelona (€1.25):
A nice but fairly average beer without standing out, it was slightly darker looking than expected but this didn’t translate to the aroma or flavour other than the darker malts coming through with the taste. There was a good combination of banana & wheat early on & some background fruits made a brief cameo too but for the most part it was a pretty average wheat beer really.
