From the Sharp Edge European Beerfest: They didn't say this was malt liquor, but I'm not overally suprised.

Well, after noting the alcohol content, I really wasnt' too surprised to open up this 99 cent bottle and find, basically, a Russian Colt 45. Corn sweetened and full of alcohol flavor, especially as it warmed. That said, it was not a bad malt liqour - had some dryness in the finish, and the first 4 or 5 sips were very pleasant.

uh-oh. i , uh, kinda like this stuff. is that a red flag? i might be an alky? 'cause there ain't much going on here but a serious junkie jolt of alcohol floated on a raft of very modest brewing seaworthiness. i'm one of approximately 11 raters in the world that considers alcohol a legitimate flavor constituent-- everyone else apologizes for it, and lauds the "masking" of it. i like alcohol, and i'm generally glad when it's apparent. to russians snorting vodka all night, this may seem like a cream soda and appreciate it's soft jocular fizz. it's an ordinary pilsner-like pour; chardonnay colored base with a brief crown of ivory slush. the aroma says unkind things-- and doesn't take them back or apologize later: it's doctor's office alcohol dampening a bowl of corn flakes. the flavor however is just a cheap retsina kind of white wine effect; a soft carbonation, almost creamy. no overt garbage contained within, like what is found in macro-swills, nor is it fruity sugar-poppy. grassy wine rather, minimal bitterness.

Bottled. Straw gold colour, poor almost nonexistent head and low condition. Very low aroma save for fleeting malt. Quite thin for 8% in the mouth with malt and some peardrop flavours as it warms up. Finish is slightly sweet but short and easily forgetable.

UPDATED: MAY 26, 2003 "Baltika Extra" was the name on my label. How in the world do they get 8% alcohol content in this "brew"? Well, being that it's malt liquor, they probably just added vodka to beer and called it a night. I'm not impressed. Color is light and smells kinda like corn beer. Boring, with no complexity at all. It's passable, maybe as something that can go along with pizza or something, but that's about it. I'd drink it before other malt swill like Cobra or Magnum.

Classic "thin" malt liquor taste; brewery did not go out of its way to select the malts for this brew.

The quintessence of a Lager/Pils on the pour, an unblurred golden yellow, the head mastodonic in size, brilliant white in color, bubbly in texture, and a ton of lace to conceal the glass. Prototypical nose, fresh, crisp and clean, all malt, start is somewhat sweet, the top skinny in feel. Finish has a stinging acidity, the hops barely noticeable, dry and lingering aftertaste, just not my "“Glass of Beer"” but I keep trying to find a lager I can call my own, oh well better luck next time.

Eeew. I mean, really. Just eeew. Very light color, which should be a warning. If it's that light and that strong, something's not right. Smells a bit sour and skunky, slightly fruity. Some definite malts, lemony and nutty at the end. Problem is the alcohol, just too strong. Actively burns at the swallow. I think it's a Russian boilermaker and they just dropped a shot of vodka into each bottle. Cheap vodka. Bad, cheap vodka.

Leave it to the Russians to create a "lite" beer with 8% alcohol. I seriously think that they just poured some vodka in the vessel before bottling. Decent head from the pour with ok carbonation. Very pale yellow color. Looks like a lite beer! Not much aroma besides some malt. Thin flavor but plesant with strong alcohol presence. Finish is light, crisp and clean. A good beer to drink in the summer and get hammered with. Not bad for a pale lager (as they claim)and a beer coming out of Russia.

This beer has a definite malt liquor feel. Light yellow with a small head. almost no aroma. Watery texture. Slightly sweet taste that has hints of fruit. Strange bland mouth feeling that is hard to explain. Alcohol is very evident.
