A strong lager beer with a taste close to classic lager varieties. The flavor is light and there is a suggestion of malt, together with sweetish notes and mild hops bitterness.
Ingredients: water, light barley malt, maltose syrup and hops.
Produced since 1998. 16.5°

16.9 oz bottle, labeled Baltika 9 Extra Lager, bottled on 020306, best by 020307. Oops - a bit past the "best by" date. Judging by my previous experience with Baltika beers, it won’t matter much, but we shall see. Honey gold with a big bubbly white head that descends rapidly. Corny grain nose, lightly sweet yet astringent, a bit of a chemically scent that I have found common to this brand. Sweet graininess with a distinct alcohol flavor. Slick maltiness. Ugh. Not good. I see from other ratings this used to be listed as a malt likka - seems more appropriate. Boozy, rough and useless, unless alcohol delivery is the only goal.

Thanks to ghawener. Drank it in El Flor. Same as No.7. Can you say maize!! Brewed with many adjuncts which gives it the maize aroma and taste. Skunky.

I have been led to understand this is one of the most popular beers in Russia. I think this beer explains nicely why the Russians drink vodka. incredibly odd nose, with an undercurrent I can’t place but that is highly unpleasant; taste is heavy, foul, and metallic. The color is acceptable, but the head looked -- and moved -- like pudding, mousse, or scrambled eggs. In short, YECH.

51 oz plastic bottle. Pours clear golden with a small white head. Aroma is sweetish malts, apple hints, and after a bit I get a definite gym sock aroma. Flavor is pretty much the same, with sweet malts, apple, some alcohol and higher alcohols, and gym sock, but not as much as in the aroma.

50 cL glass bottle. Practically no carbonation and consquently no head (colour is light yellow with a tinge of green). Aroma of wet hay and alchohol; the same components in the flavour together with a taste of soap! Really awful. The bottle I had may not have been properly sealed, but I am not willing to give it another try.

My first Russian beer. The "Devyatka". How cute. Pale golden colour with a white head. How original. The nose is dust and alcohol. How nice. The taste is alcohol, some bitterness that might be from hops, and, umm. Malt. Yes. How...nah. I’ve ran out of things to say. Almost drainpour material.

UPDATED: MAY 13, 2011 Re-rate 5/12/11: Bottle sample at a Baltika tasting. Thanks (or no thanks?) Keren. Pale clear golden. Aroma of alcohol and cereals. Flavor of sugar and alcohol. Light-bodied. Yuck. 2/2/2/2/3=1.1

Can. Yellow color with a medium, quickly-diminishing, white head. Grainy, malty aroma, with some alcohol. Flavor is cloying sweetness with lots of alcohol all the way from the beginning to the finish. Thin-bodied. I’m still very close to the 0.5l line of my glass, but a few sips of this stuff were already a bit too much. This is just awful. 3/2/2/1/4=1.2

UPDATED: OCT 24, 2010 Bottle, Market Street in McKinney, TX. Poured a clear light gold, white head, low retention......Aroma of, actually, Im not sure.....I smelled rubbing alcohol, I know that...Flavor was very sweet, but I don’t detect any hops to balance it out.....Actually I was tasting corn and a taste a bad whisky for some reason.....palate is medium with medium-high carbonation......This thing is just nasty, perhaps it can compete with Steel Reserve???? Just nasty....I have gone through half the bottle and Im not going any further....sometimes rating beers really hits hard.....
