Members of the Band of Gypsies Collaboration Beer Project include Bison Organic Beer, Calicraft Brewing Co., Highwater Brewing, Lucky Hand, Oakland Brewing Co., Pacific Brew Labs, Triple Voodoo & Uncommon Brewers (host). All of the breweries have headquarters and live in the Bay Area.

In honor of San Francisco Beer Week 2013, the Band of Gypsies is releasing its first collaboration beer, aptly named The Belgian Tramp – an organic Belgian Quad brewed with house-made candy sugar, California-grown Mission figs, raisins and dates. Boasting a hefty 10.5% abv., Belgian Tramp is sticky sweet and boozy with rich flavors of dark fruit, roasted malt and caramel, a moderate hop bitterness, and a smooth, dry finish.

Tap. Blond! Looks like a Stille nacht. Sweet aroma, candi sugar, tropical fruit, but not in a hoppy way, pears. Taste is good, but the booze is full on. Punch in the face. Pint was stupid, but good value. Apples in the taste, sweet, belgian yeasty, bit brash though. Honey when it warms a little. And actually became pretty rank when it warmed a bit more. Seems to lack finesse.

On draft at Tap 25. It pours a cloudy toffee color with an off white head. The aroma is mildly spicy and floral with some apricot and over ripe fruit. The flavor is sweaty and full with toffee and fruit. Mild baking spice. Honey and toffee in a sweet and spicy finish. A bit cloying with a heavy body. Meh.

2013 SF beer week collaboration brew. Lots of local brewers involved on this one including High Water, Uncommon Brewers, Calicraft… and others. Tasted on tap at Tap 25 on the Calicraft night. It pours a dark amber color with an off white head. The aroma is bright fruity with some Belgian yeast spice, raisins, cherry and a touch of molasses. The flavor has beautiful notes of cherry, raisins, allspice and rum. Complex and super tasty!

On tap at PIB, pours a cloudy golden with a small white head. Aroma brings out Belgian yeast, some clove and other spices. Flavour brings out loads of spicy Belgian notes, Belgian yeast, and dry crackery notes. Unusual quad, being a lot lighter, dryer and spicier than usual dark quads. Well-balanced and drinkable.

Sample at 101 Beer Kitchen. Pours dark brown with a medium tan head that recedes steadily. Short strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of malt, caramel and fruit. Full-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, ripe fruit and earthy hops. The finish is dark fruits and sweet malt. Above average overall.

A decent Belgian. Pours a thick brown-black. Smells and tastes like pineapple. Some vanilla as well. Slightly too boozy and malty. Has a little bit of a malt liquor taste. Had on tap at The Local Beer Bar. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Taste is sweet and malty with biscuits, caramel, candi sugar, dried dark fruits, sweet dark bread, marzipan, lemon zest, moist wood and alcohol. Mouthfeel is soft, creamy, round and medium bodied. Finish is sweet and slightly bittern with biscuits, sweet dark bread, marzipan, lemon zest and dried dark fruits.

Brown in color, thin head. This had an interesting flavor. Lots of stuff going on. Big alcohol flavor lots of sweet Belgian sugars. Lots of earth and rich flavor that do not mesh super well. Interesting beer.
