COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Members of the Band of Gypsies Collaboration Beer Project include Bison Organic Beer, Calicraft Brewing Co., Highwater Brewing, Lucky Hand, Oakland Brewing Co., Pacific Brew Labs, Triple Voodoo & Uncommon Brewers (host). All of the breweries have headquarters and live in the Bay Area.

In honor of San Francisco Beer Week 2013, the Band of Gypsies is releasing its first collaboration beer, aptly named The Belgian Tramp – an organic Belgian Quad brewed with house-made candy sugar, California-grown Mission figs, raisins and dates. Boasting a hefty 10.5% abv., Belgian Tramp is sticky sweet and boozy with rich flavors of dark fruit, roasted malt and caramel, a moderate hop bitterness, and a smooth, dry finish.

Draught @ Brouwer’s Café:   Deep reddish burgundy, moderate to large frothy beige head, nice lacing.   Somewhat of a mulled spicy start, raisin, fig and dates.   Sweet, with a background of bready malts.   Rather spicy, and to me very similar to mulled spiced wine.   Warming, but not alcoholic.   Moderate body and mouthfeel.   Finish has a slight touch of anise to it, and also either the white or black necco wafer candy sort of flavor.   Some aspects of this remind me a bit of Anchor Our Special Ale in its spices.   Finishes smooth, bready, spicy sweet, with candied figs/dates/raisins.   I liked this much better than I thought I would.   Good stuff, and packs a punch!

Tap at the University of Beer. Pours very dark brown with a slight creamy beige head. Aroma is darkly fruity with plum notes. Full bodied. flavor is darkly plummy fruit with, I swear, clove notes. Finishes oh so quad. Just sweet - but not stickily so. Bitter and spice to balance. Brilliant ale.

On tap at Capitol Beer, Sacramento. Pours near black with a decent tan head and a treacle aroma. There is a rich dark molasses flavor with some Belgian yeast induced fruitiness. This is a nice quad.

On tap at the Old Ivy in Vancouver. Pours a deep red, with a decent ivory head that fades to a thin layer that sticks around and little lacing. The smell is sweet, with some dark fruit and light cloves. Taste immediately smacks of cloves, raisins, and sweet sugars. Not too sweet, with a good bit of spice. Mouthfeel is fairly creamy, with the spices providing a nice bite. A fantastic belgian, not as strong as the 10.5 ABV would suggest. Sneaky, but powerful.

2013 SF beer week collaboration brew. Lots of local brewers involved on this one including High Water, Uncommon Brewers, Calicraft… and others. Tasted on tap at Tap 25 on the Calicraft night. It pours a dark amber color with an off white head. The aroma is bright fruity with some Belgian yeast spice, raisins, cherry and a touch of molasses. The flavor has beautiful notes of cherry, raisins, allspice and rum. Complex and super tasty!

On tap at Crum’s. Dark amber pour with a small off-white head that leaves a good bit of sticky lacing. Aroma of caramel, cola, some dark. Flavor starts out with chocolate and roasted malts, followed by raisins, allspice, and a big hit of booziness at the end. Really comes across more like a liquor drink than a beer in the finish. Would definitely have again.
