COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
ABV in between 4.2% and 4.9%. This excellent brew is our flagship beer. It is a heavily hopped pale ale. India Pale Ales originated during the lengthy colonization of India. British servicemen in India expected beer, however, the styles of the time did not survive the long voyage to India. Brewers quickly discovered that hops acted as preservatives in beer. As such, the heavily hopped ales designed to survive the long trips were born – now known as India Pale Ales.

A great dose of hops. Taste comes down in a great arch lasting over fifteen seconds.

Does the job of an IPA just fine. Deep amber colour, rocky head, lingering bitterness, the goodness of Cascade hops, all with a malt backbone. Does it with little fuss, but doesn’t offer anything terribly unexpected.

4 ounce sample at the Brewpub in 6-beers sampler for $14.00 CAD. Very good!

Pint at the brewpub in Banff. Pours a deep gold with orange tints, fairly rocky off white head. Aroma is mild grapefruit hops, slight grassiness. Taste is restrained but very fresh English tasting hops. Bitterness is good but mild. Malt is subtle as well but slightly cereal. Finish is bright and fresh. It’s a nicely made IPA but subtle and fairly middle of the road.

Bottle, brought fresh from the brewery by Parksy. Light orange amber, medium off white head. Aroma features nice coniferous hop notes, just not very aggressive. Palate features much the same, with a nice underlying caramel malt structure. The only problem with this brew, and it has been commented on before, is that it is just too light. Really this constitutes a nice APA, but is not assertive enough to fit an IPA style. Still a decent beer though.

It was a nice amber and orange color with a faint haze. By the time I had my sample box there was little head left. The aroma was of hops – floral and earthy. With a touch of grapefruit citrus. The flavor was again quite hoppy with an understated bitterness when compared to other American IPAs. The malt base was quite good. This would be a good IPA for introducing a someone who has had little exposure. The beer was medium bodied and had a clean and dry finish. I think it was a little to light on the alcohol and would be better served around 5.5% – 6.0% for my tastes. I ordered a pint of this when I was done my sampler which I quite enjoyed. In fact I enjoyed it so much I filled a 64 ounce growler to take home!

turboespresso (256) - Port Moody, British Columbia, CANADA - SEP 28, 2010
UPDATED: SEP 29, 2010 On tap. Clear pale malt with small head that disappears quickly. Mild hop aroma. A little fruity. This beer tastes like a standard english pale ale. The hop flavour is just way too weak to be an IPA. Otherwise, it’s an ok pale ale.

Sample glass. Ran out just after I got my sample the first time and had run out the night before my second visit. Dark amber. Moderate hop nose without assertiveness. Flavour is middle of the road hoppy but it has promise. I look for a more aggresive version down the road or a stronger alternative when they get more taps running.

Draught at Banff Ave Brewing Co, Banff, AB, Canada.
Slightly hazy amber colour with average sized frothy white head. Deliciously fruity bitter hoppy aroma with some maltiness. Grainy malt and fruity/floral bitter hoppy flavour. Bitter aftertaste that doesn’t last that long.
