Cask at Lymestone Vaults, Newcastle under Lyme. Pours black brown with stiff light tan head. Smooth, some choc, creamy, dies a little on the finish. Decent stout porter.

30th June 2015. Cask half-pint in The Wellington, Birmingham City Centre. Poured a very dark brown colour with a beige head: almost a Black and Tan look. Rich aroma of roasted malts and hints of chocolate bars. The taste is fairly sweet with the chocolate from the nose showing heavily in the smooth, rich body. Really enjoyed this, had a train to catch or I would have had a pint, and then another, etc, etc.

Bottled. Deep brown colour, mediumsized bubbly white head, which vanishes quite fast. Aroma is roasted malts, raisins, some chocolate, brown sugar and mild sweetness. Flavour is chocolate, toffee, some ashes, toasted rye bread and some sweet syrupy notes.

[Cask at Chippenham BF] Dark brown with a light fizz. Chocolate, espresso & smoke. Some ginger in the finish. Didn’t do it for me - a little on the thin and dry side. c8

Bottle from Bernie’s Real Ale Off License, Shirley. This is a good one. Deep mahogany appearing pitch with a dwindling beige top. Aroma really sucks you in; clotted cream fudge, coal smoke, chewy dark things, fig. Swills around the mouth with a seductive interplay of milk chocolate sweetness, well roasted malt, sticky dried fruit and some unusual honeyed shrub notes suggesting German or Czech hops. Hints of brine and rust, bags of squashy black grape sweetness, chocolate, vanilla. The port is apparent but not overdone and perfectly offset by wispy coffee and smoky malt notes. Feels a bit sweet and naughty, but that’s the attraction, and it stops well short of tooth rot . Nice brew- oodles of flavour and balance. Would revisit.

Cask conditioned at Fleetwood Beer Fest ’11. Black with cream head. This was quite a fruity porter with a sweet sherry like character, there are some liquorice and tarry notes but there is also a slight sharp sourness, Overall reasonable.
