Bottle from Bernie’s Real Ale Off License, Shirley. This is a good one. Deep mahogany appearing pitch with a dwindling beige top. Aroma really sucks you in; clotted cream fudge, coal smoke, chewy dark things, fig. Swills around the mouth with a seductive interplay of milk chocolate sweetness, well roasted malt, sticky dried fruit and some unusual honeyed shrub notes suggesting German or Czech hops. Hints of brine and rust, bags of squashy black grape sweetness, chocolate, vanilla. The port is apparent but not overdone and perfectly offset by wispy coffee and smoky malt notes. Feels a bit sweet and naughty, but that’s the attraction, and it stops well short of tooth rot . Nice brew- oodles of flavour and balance. Would revisit.
