COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Banks’s have produced a rip-roaring beer for every English football fan to enjoy. This easy drinking, ’belter’ of a beer with malty, hoppy flavours and a refreshing clean, bitter ’finish’ is a winner every time. Back of the net! Banks’s Lion’s Roar ABV is 3.8% and 2.2 alcohol units per 568ml pint.

Bottle. Launched to mark Englands world cup bid. Unlike that this is quite reasonable. Bronze and clear with a hoppy bitterness. A pleasant bitter which ironically is how England fans felt ( minus the pleasant ) Nice try-the beer not the football team.

This beer was brewed to celebrate the 2010 Football World Cup, pity the English football team didn’t perform as well as this did. Clear 500ml bottle, best before 31st May 2011, drank and reviewed 30th June 2010. Poured into two half pint tumblers. The beer was a rusty, terracotta red colour, clear and bright. On top a cream coloured bubbley head, which fell away but left no lacing. The smell was a citrus-hoppy aroma, fairly pronounced for a UK bitter. The taste had a hop bitterness up front, it was refreshing with a dry mouthfeel. A malty aftertaste come towards the end of the tasting. Considering it is only a 3.8%ABV it feels right and is one of Banks’s better beers in my opinion.

Bottled. A golden beer which pours with no head. A grassy aroma with a bit of citrus. Fairly earthy in the mouth with a touch of sweetness and noticeable pasteurized like flavours. It’s not too bad though.

Bottle. Amber beer with a fairly strong head. The aroma is weakly toffee and hopped, and the flavour is bitter, hopped and toffee roasted with a watery element. Overall a reasonable hopped toffee flavoured bitter beer.

500ml bottle. Pours orange golden with a medium head. Aroma is burnt toast, slightly skunked and some fruity malt. Bready caramel start. Spicy strong bitter finish.

50cl bottle. Amber with a scummy looking off-white head; attractive caramel and citrus aroma, with a hint of lime; crisp in the mouth, with a good, light, malt structure, with biscuit, lemon and toffee flavours; then a good burst of fresh English hops before a dry finish. Much better than expected, a solid English ale, worth returning to - unlike our football team.

Quite a good beer with caramel notes, Tastes like a good traditional bitter should do, would be great on a session as low in carbonation and not too strong

Bottle from Lidl. Pours a amber copper colour with a thin white head. Plenty of hops and malt in the aroma. The taste is sweet with plenty of malt with a long dry finish. A well made beer.

UPDATED: JUN 21, 2010 Bottle following the unprecedented DISGRACE that was England’s performance Vs Algeria (too nervous and angry to drink during the game). I opened this in a foul temper hoping to find it more Tabby’s Mewl than Lion’s Roar and looking forward to utterly slating it. That wasn’t possible because despite the clear bottle, pasteurisation and hints of ’T-beer’, it’s a crisp, hopped-up, biscuity sessions that succeeded in putting something like a smile back on my face. Brilliant bronze with a fine white lid. Heavily lime-accented aroma but, amazingly, some fresh-squeezed hop and decent malts there; nettles, tomato stem, malted milk dunked in stewed Darjeeling. Miles better than expected flavour-wise; lime and grapefruit, soapy orange, clean lingering biscuit malts. All credit to them, Bank’s have produced something totally unexpected and out of the box here: the best shit clear-bottled England cash-in beer I’ve ever had, having just had my heart broken and watched my abysmal, whining countrymen eliminate themselves (probably) from the world cup finals.
