(Cask at Carpenter’s Arms, Marble Arch, London, 22 May 2011) Dark brown colour with hints of ruby. Frothy beige head. Malty nose with notes of caramel, raisins, prunes and dark bread. Malty taste with caramel, dark bread, toasty malt, raisins, prunes and a slightly bitter-sweet finish. Rather light body with smooth mouthfeel. A touch of sweetness and a mild bitterness. Quite nice.

Cask, William Rufus, Carlisle.Soft, smooth and sweet, with that standard Banks taste. Malt obviously dominates , low aroma and a short finish, bit thin on the palate. Tasty enough and sessionable.

[Cask at The Falcon (JDW), High Wycombe] Beautiful ruby-chestnut colour with a thick creamy head. Rich and smooth, with fruity caramel up front, but did rather collapse into a mildly bitter and dusty finish. Not as good as first impressions suggested.

Cask conditioned at a Wetherspoons. Brown, ruby with off white head. Heavy, sweet, caramel flavours, full on the palate with a sweet fruity undertone. A little lifeless.

Gravity cask at the Stourbridge beer festival. Pours ruby brown with no head. Aroma was sour fruity coffee. Taste didn’t have much to start. Some fruit on the finish with a little coffee on the aftertaste. Watery.

Cask conditioned handpump Briar Rose Birmingham. A dark brown to ruby coloured mild with a whitish tight head and lacing. A typical sweet West Midlands mild. Plenty of caramel over a light body. All quite thin but fruity and likeable.

Cask @ Counting House, JDW. Amber colour, tan head. Aroma is slight roasted malts and caramel. Flavour is caramel malts, bit of coffee, light roastiness. Roasty finish. Pleasant.

A reddish brown beer with sulphurous aroma. Tastes fairly malty with a more bitter than usual (for a mild) finish. Fairly thin bodied, almost a standard bitter. Malty aftertaste leaves the mouth wanting another sip.
