sersdf (1000), chicago, Illinois, USA Aug 21, 2006 smells sweet. bit creamy. tastes a bit watered-down, but very creamy. smells great. slightly large bubbles. pretty roasty tasting. bit alcoholic. Zeswaft (1000), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 19, 2006 toasty bread, uninventive, kind of sweet despite being "dry". mediocre brewblackhole (1367), Muskego, Wisconsin, USA Aug 15, 2006 Very amazing stout, aroma is definitely chocolate that has been cellared on stored in a cask in Belgium, very tempting and delicious, tate is all chocolate, roastiness, and a well balanced roasted and hop bitterness in the end. Not much coffee coming through,so while its not really sweet, I still wouldn’t call this a dry stout. The most fanastic delicate chocolate taste I’ve had in a long time. To bad this is not easier to obtain kramer (2406), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 11, 2006 22 oz bottle, via porterhouse. Pours a clear dark black body under a fizzy and foamy two finger brown head that faded fairly quickly. Aroma is roasty and chocolaty, with a nice dry hoppiness. Notes of chocolate fudge, chalk, coffee, and a touch of nuttiness. Flavor is very roasty and dry, with a great crisp finish that had a little chalkiness. Notes of coffee, chocolate, and a hint of smoke. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with fine carbonation that foams in the mouth. The texture is slightly oily. Not as good or hoppy as 3F Black Sun, but I do think it’s a good beer worth seeking out. Phatz (225), Paradise, Pennsylvania, USA Aug 1, 2006 Appearance: Pours a very dark black with a frothy tan head.
Smell: Caramel molasses and raisin fill the nose.
Taste: This beer is complex and vinous. Layer by layer it peeled away a new flavor sweet and smooth the bitter sweet chocolate and coffee bean then the vanilla and molasses and then the finish has a nice hop presence. Beautiful!
Mouthfeel: Creamy & smooth. So incredibly smooth.
Drinkability: There is a reason this should be one of the highest ranked stouts; because it is freaking good! I could very easily session this beer despite the 6.70% ABV.
Hope this is helpful.
Cheers!
tbookman (618), Ephrata, Pennsylvania, USA Jul 27, 2006 Deep brown color - medium light head. Aroma of caramel, coffee and firewood. Flavor is quite rich, with lots of roasted malt and coffee flavors. Body is smooth and creamy and floats over the tongue. Finish is smooth with just a hint of toastyness. Warming and flavorful - very nice! zavoid (1), USA does not count Jul 20, 2006 This is one of my favorite beers of all time.. Shame they only sell it in maine. Well worth the trip to maine for it though. CaptainCougar (5379), Rockville, Maryland, USA Jul 14, 2006 Bottle thanks to OhioDad: Pours a barely transparent dark brown with a nicely lacing tan head. Sweet milk chocolatey aroma has good caramel and lightly roasted malty presence. Starts sweet and toasty with some good bready caramel malty flavor. Nicely balanced, smooth and drinkable.
