4.8 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20 Kinz (2694) - Glen Allen, Virginia, USA - AUG 14, 2003
Thanks to Mike's mom for lugging these bottles around New England and getting one down to me. The bottle appears to be hand capped, complete with the same indention I have on my homebrew caps. Almost totally opaque blackness, large caramel head that subsides slowly into a beautiful veneer of tiny bubbles. Aroma is a fantastic blend of bitter chocolate and spruce, finely balanced. Taste is almost identical, starting off with chocalate bitterness, fading into a sprucey, piney finish. The balance and interplay is just amazing. An extraordinary brew.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 Gusler (2654) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - AUG 9, 2003
On the pour a atramentous color, the head Bunyanesque in size, the consistency that of whipped cream and the color a winsome light chocolate brown, as it dematerializes, a fine covering of lace is left behind to meld with the glass. The aroma that of strong coffee, bittersweet chocolate and lots of malt, sweet and malt-laden is the start, the top full and pleasing to the palate. Finish is crisply acidic, bitter-sweet chocolate aftertaste with the hops persistent and pleasant in their spicy bite, all in all a fine representative to the style.

Excellent dry stout! Starts off with an initial burst of coffee flavors, but finishes with a sweet, chocolatey taste. Wish i could find this stuff in my area...
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 aracauna (2691) - Georgia, USA - FEB 26, 2003
UPDATED: FEB 28, 2003 Pitch black with a huge, noisy dark tan head. You would have thought with the fizziness of the head that it would have faded quickly, but the fizz subsides eventually and the head sticks around for a while longer. The nose is chocolate, roasty malt, prunes. The flavor is dominated by bitter hops but underneath that are toffee, wood and a hint of milk chocolate. The flavor would be better if they lowered the hops/burnt bitterness and raised the malt profile and complexity but this is still an excellent beer. The mouthfeel is prickly from the high carbonation.

A very nice stout, very dry. A nice balance of the hops and malts. Chocolate hints in the finish.

Very nice. Black as a moonless night with a tan head that hung in there. Big chocolate and coffee tones as it warmed. A stout full of rich character with surprising complexity (that means it is good!) All I can say is keep up the good work Bar Harbor!

Almost black appearance, tan head. Nose is dominantly chocolate and coffee. Plenty of roast in the body, notes of coffee. A bit thin, which wouldn’t be uncommon in this style, yet balanced. Chocolate and coffee do this style of stout justice.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Oakes (10184) - Gibsons, British Columbia, CANADA - DEC 17, 2002
UPDATED: JUN 10, 2008 re-rate (original 3.6) Very dark brown colour. Thick light brown head. The aroma is richly nutty and chocolatey, holding a lot of promise. It’s got a full body, very rounded with lots of chocolate, nuts, woody hops and just a hint of roastiness. The finish is quite dry, and with lots of flavour. Highly enjoyable brew.
