Really nice roaste aroma flowing out of the glass. That taste was of medium roasted malt, light coffee, light chocolate, and lightvanilla. Great balance. Nice roasted bitter sweet chocolate finish. Very good. arrogantb (734), Denver, Colorado, USA

The head was foamy, tan, and sizable. The aroma was roasted, charred, and dark chocolates. the flavor made me think "This is what Guinness should be". The label did not lie, the chocolate flavor was "focused". This was good stuff but 12oz would have been enough.

Poured into a sniffer tan two finger head that turns to a great lacing in top of a rich black body
Aromas of roasted malts, chocolate, espresso and light amount of alcohol enter my nose
The flavors on this brew are wicked good yes I’m from Maine. Chocolate coffee and booze what more can a Yankee ask for
Smooth comes to mind when thinking about the mouthfeel, rich and thick as well.
You can easily finish a bomber by yourself, especially on a cold New England night but it is much more fun to share. Buy the bombers while you can. Now for the 12 oz well “If it ant broke don’t fix it “is all I can say and they tried to fix it. (Different yeast not bottled conditioned as well as different water) It goes against everything that is down east in me to see what they have done to this brew. Ok enough ranting maybe the flatlander that bought this company will get the hint when the sales go south although that is where he is from

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Dec 23, 2007 Pours opaque black with mahogany hue and a tan frothy head that dies pretty quick. Nose is roasty with chocolate, a hint of coffee and a vanilla bean scent. Taste is nice and roasty, chocolate and bakers chocolate and a vanilla/toffee like finish with a little bitterness. Velvet in the mouth and not syrupy in any way. Nice carbonation. This is somewhat porter like in feel but has a lot of delicious stout taste. A perfect balance of flavor and body and a delight to sip. Could do another!

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 11, 2008 I did a side by side tasting of this beer. The new mass produced 12 oz version and the 22 oz hand crafted version. I rated the 22 oz version. The version that made this stout popular.
12 oz
Bottle pours pitch black with tan head. Has 1 dimensional aroma featuring a slight malt base. Has a medium light body. Its a bit thin for a stout. Flavor is somewhat hoppy and has malt flavor that is somewhat boring. Overall this version is just an ok brew. Not much to talk about really. This version would get a rating no more than a 3.1 or 3.2
22 oz
Bottle pours pitch black with thick tan head. Has a wonderful aroma of sweet roasted malts and chocolate. Very complex. Has a medium body and is much fuller compared to the 12 oz version. Flavor is smooth and roasty. Dark malts, chocolate, caramel, coffee, toffee, and just tasty goodness. Overall, this is one of the best dry stouts I’ve tried. I’m glad I got to taste the mass produced version and the version that made this such a popular stout. Its truely world class. Tilley4 (218), Huron, Tennessee, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Feb 7, 2008 Wow, this beer reminds me of a really good porter. Very dark and malty with a big helping of roasted malt and a little cocoa, this beer is a smooth drinker. Fairly creamy for a dry stout as well. Thicker than a porter, but thinner than an Impy.
Really good little brew here. basewars (145), Albany, New York, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 4/5 | 9/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Aug 25, 2009 Pours black with medium brown head. Not much aroma, but a bit of chocolate. Full bodied. Flavor is chocolate, graham cracker, and coffee. The alcohol is completely hidden. Really good stout. Sonicdescent (382), Donora, Pennsylvania, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 22, 2009 Beer gets low marks for appearance, what was there of the head only appeared after some agitation, black liquid with ruby highlights, not much in the way of lace.
Smell is heavy malt, toffee, chocolate, a small hint of concentrated vanilla. No sign of alcohol or roasted malt.
Taste is altogether another story, quite good and difficult to explain. Tobacco, chocolate is very light, kind of creamy on the mouth. Thick, but bubbly.
I could chalk up the appearance to the pour, which I thought was good enough, but maybe an outside factor is influencing this, because other than that, this is a world class brew.
