Earning 91 points in 1997, our Thunder Hole Ale won first place and its second Gold Medal at the World Beer Championships in Chicago. Locally brewed Thunder Hole Ale scored higher than Pete's Wicked, Newcastle Brown, Sam Adams, as well as many other Brown Ales from Maine and around the world. Bomber @ Thurston’s Lobster Pound on Mount Desert Maine, shared with my dad. Pours light amber up to the light, mixed with a muddy brown. With a 2 finger foamy creamy head. Big nose I noticed on the pour, sweet malty nice. Taste is nice with a big chocolate malt kick, sweet after taste and an empty back end. Smooth palate, damn tasty choco brown.

Interesting dark amber and quite translucent color for a brown ale. The aroma is rather disappointing with some slightly metallic notes with grassy hops. Much more reminiscent of an amber ale than a brown. Flavor is mild, somewhat sweet and nutty. Hop finish is try and refreshing.

A very tasty medium bodied ale that poured to a medium brown color with decent carbonation and an off-white head that left okay lacing. The nose was a very pleasant roasted nutty malt, and the flavor followed suit. Although only 5% in alcohol, this left a sweet, tasty, somewhat warming finish.

Dark brown with slight head. Nutty aromas, burnt chocolate, caramel, light vanilla scents as well. Nutty flavors persist, but are met by a balancing hops brigade, which evens out the brew nicely. There are sour fruit notes developing towards the finish and they dominate over the roasted mocha and coffee flavors.

Clear brown body with a beige head. Malty aroma with a light nuttiness, light caramel, and some grain. Medium sweet malt flavor with a little caramel, lightly earthy, and faint nut. Aftertaste is sweet malt and a bit of roast malt.

(22oz bottle) Hazy copper/brown body with large fluffy beige head. Aroma is medium sweet, nut, some metallic. Taste is medium sweet, caramel, some chocolate, nut/salt, light roast, sourness, faint earthy. Light-medium body, light acidity.

Thanks to mkgrenwel for the bomber. Clear brown with a large head. Aroma of grains and caramel with a bit of dust. Flavor was a little thin; caramel, some chocolate, grains and nuts. Fairly good taste, but the texture is just too thin.

Tried this one a couple of times - most recently was a 4 month old bottle that had been kept in a dark fridge - surprisingly oxydated. Sweet bready malts, slight nuttiness, hops both times had a metal taste to them. Maybe the bottles just don’t hold up well.
