Medvejie Lake, south of Sitka, is tough as far as lakes go. The steep cliffsides surrounding the glacial lake give it a frequent wind tunnel effect, and it’s only accessible by foot or float plane. Derived from the Russian word for bear, Medvejie is pronounced meh-duh-VEE-gee locally (but probably not in Russia). Our stout is also strong like the bear. Fueled by flaked oats, roasted barley and chocolate malts, it also packs some heat with 7.25% ABV.

Malts: two row, crystal, brown, chocolate, black, flaked oats, roasted barley
Hops: nugget, cascade, willamete

Black body with ring of head. Thick oaty aroma along with black barley and a smooth penetratingly deep roast, making for a thought-provoking combination. Rich synthesis of oats and dark roasted malts shape the robust, yet smooth body. Aptly suited for Alaskan winters. A lovely, hearty brew.

UPDATED: APR 3, 2014 Pours a dark brown and leaves the same color body, one finger off-white/tan foamy head that quickly dies to a film coating the top of the body, lingering clingy lacing; the aroma has deep dark roasted chocolate malts, light toasted barley and a bit of coffee coming through; the taste is bittersweet between the chocolate and the coffee, barley helps to balance a bit, dry coffee aftertaste, dry finish; its pretty easy on the palate, overall, very good American Stout that I would have again

Tap. Pours a clear flat black body with a small foamy light brown head. The nose is really nice, roasty and chocolaty with an underlying caramel sweetness and a little coffee. The flavor is on the sweeter side for the style, but it’s not overly distracting. The finish is laced with a big of coffee and burnt malt, lingering coffee note. Medium to full bodied with a little clingy sweetness and a soft gentle carbonation level. Not a bad stout, but not among the best.

Bottle shared with Guillaume! Cheers! Pours an opaque black with a small brown head. Some visible carbonation. Aroma: Coffee, chocolate, raisins. Palate: Thick bodied, creamy, slightly fizzy. Long, nice finish. Taste: Slightly sweet start that quickly changes to bitter burnt nuts, but not too roasty. Nice.

Bottle from some random bottle shop in Scagway Alaska. Pours an opaque black with a bit of tan head that dissipates slowly. Smell is tons of chocolate, some roasted malt, not much in the hop spectrum. Palate is medium bodied with good carbonation. Taste is slightly roasty at first with a bit of sweetness, then a bit more roastiness. Aftertaste continues the slightly bitter roastiness for a bit before tailing off into nothing. Pretty good, but more of an imperail stout than an RIS.

Very deep brown beer with a foamy tan head. Good carbonation and full mouthfeel makes this a creamy and pleasant ale. Nose is chocolate and toast with vanilla and milk. Very creamy. Full of chocolate flavor. Like this one a lot.

Sampled at the ’12 GABBF. Dark beer with a thick foamy tan head. Malted milk ball nose. Full flavored beer with flavors of malt powder malted milk balls, chocolate and some roasted grains. More alcohol flavor than the ABV would seem to indicate. Nice big beer.
