Bottled: Dark amber coloured. Fluffy beige head. Malty and fruity aroma. Has some distinct spicy notes. Flavour is very spiced and fruity. Has a light caramel touch. Is quite light bodied without being thin and watery. Quite like this.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 hopscotch (7523) - Vero Beach, Florida, USA - FEB 5, 2010
Draft… Pours very dark but a clear crimson hue beckons when held up to bright light. No head. The nose consists of a virtual plethora of dark fruits – fig, date, raisin, etc. Full-bodied with a buttery mouthfeel and tingly carbonation. Nicely balanced. Moderately roasty, with prune and molasses essences. Semi-sweet, dark fruit finish.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 imdownthepub (7461) - Banbury, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - FEB 7, 2012
Bottled, 330ml from La Cave de L’Estam, Verdun, France. Dark brown with cream head. Honeyed but also slightly tart beer, fruity, apricot, plum with the overlaid syrupy note. Quite heavy on the palate, there is a roasty malt background too. Reasonable.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 MoritzF (7342) - Bochum, GERMANY - MAR 15, 2006
(bottle) Very dark brown colour with a frothy beige medium head. Sweet malty, slightly roasted aroma with a touch of honey, raisins, yeasts and coriander spice. Sweet flavour, medium to full bodied, lively carbonated. Sweet and sugary toastmalty taste, honeyish fruity; moderately sweet malty finish with notes of coriander and alcohol and a cola-like aftertaste. Not bad, but too sweet and too spicy for me.

Bottle from River’s Bend. Poured clear dark brown with a large frothy brown head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Solid balanced toasted malt aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth sticky texture. Moderate balanced roasted flavor with a medium sweet finish of average duration. Good brew with spicy food.

Bottle: Dark amber coloured, small off-white foamy layer, sweet fruity (honey, strawberries(?) ) nose with a touch of roasted malt; sweet flavour, medium bodied; sweet-fruity, slightly alcoholic and sugary finish. A bit too much on the sweet side to be really good...........
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 MesandSim (7109) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - MAR 10, 2007
A Mes rate:
Stunned to discover we had not already rated this and the regular Barbar so we squeezed a couple of quick ones in at ZBF. Easily superior to the pale version. Great cloudy dark brown colour thick tan head goes the same was as the blonde. Sweet again like the regular Barbar and obvious honey but more dark malt character showing though here thankfully. More complex than the blonde and some nice bitterness adding some balance for the finish. Sadly I always find this over carbed. Best enjoyed at slightly above room temperature in front of a log fire on a cold winters day if you ask me.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20 Koelschtrinker (7034) - Köln (Cologne), North Rhine-Westphalia, GERMANY - JUN 2, 2011
Spitze! 12/13/11/12/9/12
