3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Svesse (5197) - Hässelby, - FEB 9, 2007(Bottle) Dark, reddish brown colour with ruby hints. Huge, foamy, but brief, beige head leaving lots of lacing. Fruity, floral nose with dark rye bread, chocolate, prunes, notes of orange peel and apricots. Underlying sweetish honey notes. Fruity, floral taste with dark rye bread, orange, dates, chocolate and some coffeeish bitterness with hints of spruce needles in the finish. Medium body, smooth and chewy mouthfeel. Rather sweet, but fresh, not cloying. Very nice balance between the chewy, dark, fruity malt and the brown-sugar-like sweetness, sent off with a warming bittersweet puff at the end. Nice one.

Whole Foods, Bowery 33cl ($4): Pours dark brown with a smallish head. Aroma is loads of dark fruit and liqueur. Taste is very, very sweet. Perhaps too sweet. I guess the honey is making its mark. This tastes like a thick honey pastry. I think I have all the same problems with this as with the Barbar blonde.

Pours a deep ruby into the glass, with no real retentive head nor lacing of which to speak. The nose is of sour yeasty dough and under-ripened citrus. Flavors have malt, lots of yeasty sours, a ton of sour fruit and light flowery greens, with a crisp sour finish. Bitters balance out the brew relatively well, but the overactive carbonation and seltzery mouthfeel leave this medium-bodied offering a bit out-of-kilter.
